Legislative Branch Governor General -remember…the royal representative in our country House of Commons (AKA, Lower House) -elected members from ridings -where laws are passedand debated -currently 338 seats -elections every 4 years Senate (AKA, Upper House) -provides final check on legislation passed in House of C -may also introduce, debate and pass bills • Controlled by the Speaker of the House (elected officials) • Speaker mediates • Are elected by the members of parliament (MPs)

  8. Senate • Senate Members must be: • 1. Canadian citizens • 30 years of age • Live in the province/territory that they represent • Own at least $4000 worth of property • Serve until they are 75 years of age • Any problems with this??

  10. Some Information • Base salary of $142,400 • Highest-paid senator made $222,500 • They get a raise every April • Certain senators receive a car and/or residence allowance • In 2015, senators sat for 58 days – they do not have to campaign like MPs (Figures taken from Monroe, 2015)
