  1. The Significance of a 5-Star Rating for an Air Conditioner The star rating of an air conditioner is based on a system that is used to denote how energy efficient an electrical appliance is. The more stars an appliance has, the more efficient it is. The 1-star to 5-star rating system was devised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency of India to ensure the layman would be able to make an informed decision when purchasing appliances like air conditioners.

Calculating the Star Rating of an Air Conditioner A star rating is awarded to an air conditioner based on two basic parameters: Its Cooling Capacity: Expressed in British Thermal Units (BTU), the cooling capacity measures the ability of an air conditioner to cool a room. Energy Efficiency Rating (EER): This signifies the amount of cooling provided by an air conditioner when it is given only a certain amount of power. 3-Star Vs 5-Star Air Conditioners The lowest star rating for an appliance is 1 and 5 is the highest, which basically means that a 5-star air conditioner can cool down your room in the most efficient manner, while also using lesser energy as compared to a 3-star air conditioner. While 3-star air conditioners are less expensive as compared to 5-star air conditioners, the latter can prove to be the better choice down the line. An air conditioner represents a decent-sized upfront expense, but also comes with a recurring cost in the form of utility bills and maintenance charges. So, while you may save some money on the upfront cost by buying a 3-star air conditioner, the total cost of ownership of the 5-star air conditioner will be much lower in the longer run thanks to its lower power consumption.
