Chronological Order • Chronological order is when things happen in a story as they do in time. • Ex. The Lottery – first they game to the square, then they drew the tickets, then they killed the woman • A story with flashbacks (or flashforwards) is NOT told in chronological order
Style/Stylistic Technique • If I saw Mr. Brandon walking down the hallway, and I said to you, “I really like Mr. Brandon’s style” • What would I be talking about?
Style/Stylistic Technique • An author’s characteristic way of writing – something that defines who they are as writers • Stylistic Techniques are the different methods that the writer uses to create their style. An author may use metaphors, sentence variety, or unique descriptions • If you say “I love the way the author ________” then you are talking about the author’s style and stylistic techniques
Satire • Satire is when people or ideas are made fun of in order to be humorous. This is most common in politics
Denoument • Another word for conclusion of the story • In a plot line: • Introduction/Exposition Rising Action Climax • Falling Action Conclusion/Denoument
Epiphany • The moment when a character (or person) has a moment of clarity and learns something significant • Ex. When a person sees a guitar in a shop and realizes they don’t want to be an architect, they want to be a musician.
Historical Reference • What it looks like – When something historical is referenced in a story • Ex. The expression on your face, I’d think you were reading the Diary of Anne Frank!
Voice • Similar to style, it is the distinctive tone of the author • This is easiest to see in First Person Point of View
