  3. Problems with Neutrality France • French sent Edmond Genet to win American support • Began recruiting Americans for war effort against British • Violation of American neutrality GRR!

Spain • U.S. wanted to secure land claims west of the Appalachian mountains and gain shipping rights on the Mississippi River Pinckney’s Treaty • Spain gave up all claims to land east of the Mississippi River except Florida • Recognized the 31st parallel as the southern boundary of the U.S. • Agreed to open the Mississippi River to traffic by Spanish subjects and U.S. citizens & to allow American traders to use the port of New Orleans

  5. England • British still maintained forts in the Northwest Territory, violating the Treaty of Paris • British encouraged Native American resistance

  6. Jay’s Treaty • British agreed to evacuate their posts in the Northwest Territory • Very popular with western settlers • Allowed British to continue their fur trade on the American side of the U.S./Canada border
