INDIAN SCHOOL AL WADI AL KABIR DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCE
A warm greetings to all present here.Teaching Social studies presents teachers with a unique set of challenges not always found in other disciplines. We Social studies teachers at ISWK excite students about the world, to help them see the role that they can play in making society more equal and more just, to express their ideas powerfully to see that Social studies is about real people’s lives and about their relationship with each other and nature. Creating a lively, playful, experiential curriculum about things that matter is more fun for students and we Social studies teachers at ISWK follow the mantra “ Tell me, I’ll forget; Show me, I’ll remember; Involve me, I’ll understand”.
KWL sheet is a strategy that is used as a study tool. This works for an individual, group or entire class. It is a way to synthesize information into a visual aid. The students are also able to keep track of what they have done and what they still would like, or need to do. KWL
Think-pair-share is to provide students with the opportunity to process information, construct quality responses to questions and to effectively communicate the response. The teacher poses an open-ended question to which the students learn with their learning partner and work together, sharing ideas, discussions, clarifying and challenging. The pair then shares with the whole class.
“Chunk and Chew” strategy is highly effective in supporting students’ understanding of important concepts. The purpose of chunking the Text is to provide students with the ability to break the text into shorter or more manageable units. By following the “Chunk and Chew” strategy teachers deliver their lessons in small “chunks” and then give students time to “chew” the information either with partners or in small groups.
JIGSAW The Jigsaw classroom is a co-operative learning technique. Just as in a JIGSAW puzzle each piece – each students’ part is essential for completion and full understanding of the final product. Each student’s part is essential and that is precisely what makes this strategy so effective.
Role play The joy of role play is that students can ‘become’ anyone they like for a short time. The President, the Queen, a Millionaire, a Pop star... the choice is endless! Role playing is about experiencing new people, places thought and ways of thinking that one may not normally encounter. The characters will interact and learn valuable life lessons.
