  1. What is Schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is a long term mental disorder of a type involving a break down, in a relation between thought, emotion, and behaviour, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate feelings, and actions. This interferes with a persons mental functioning and behaviour, and in the long term changes their personality.

  2. Who gets Schizophrenia? • Schizophrenia effects about 1 out of every 100 people around the world. • The first stage of Schizophrenia is usually in adolescence or early adulthood. • A person is at a higher risk for developing Schizophrenia if they are a male between ages 15 and 24 or female ages 12 to 25. • Schizophrenia is also common if a medical problem surrounded the birth, or has a close relative with the illness.

  3. Some symptoms of Schizophrenia • Hallucinations: these are things a person sees, hears, smells or feels. “Voices” are the most common type of hallucinations in Schizophrenia. This causes the person to do things they normally wouldn’t do, order the person to do things. Sometimes the voices in the persons head can “talk to each other” • Thought disorders: usually a dysfunctional way of thinking. This is also known as “disorganized thinking” this is usually when a person has trouble organizing his or her thoughts, or connecting to the logically. They may speak in garbled talk that is hard to understand because the voices keep saying so much that its hard for the person to speak. This is also known as “thought blocking” • Movement disorders: A person may do certain motions over and over again because the voices are telling them what to do. • Lack of pleasure in everyday life (depression): having to go threw one day is a struggle. These people start feeling depressed because they're “not normal” and don’t have the same life as everyone else. • Speaking little, even when forced to interact, &trouble focusing or paying attention: keeping to themselves, not wanting to bother with anyone else. The “voices” may be telling the person that its not “good” for them to be speaking to other people. (voices impacting on their life's)

Listing and briefly explaining some factors that contribute to Schizophrenia • Schizophrenia impacting genetics: being related to someone with Schizophrenia greatly increases the risk getting the disease. If someone in your family has the illness, the chance of you getting it is 9% higher than someone who doesn’t have Schizophrenia in their genetics. • Schizophrenia Development in the Fetus: If something goes wrong in the fetus it may have many ways of impacting the child’s risk of Schizophrenia. This may be because of a Viral Infection, Hormonal Imbalance, or a Nutritional Stress. • Brain development, from the earliest stage of fetal development, Schizophrenia can be devolved. Millions of neutrons are formed and migrate to different regions of the brain forming, and sometimes when something goes wrong the neutrons don’t develop.

  5. What type of treatment is available for people with Schizophrenia? • The most effective treatment would be medication. Schizophrenia can be treated, but it isn’t something you can get rid of. • Medications can reduce the psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia and usually allow the patient to function more effectively and appropriately. • Medications work by helping to correct the brain. • Psychological counseling can help with managing the impact this disease on the everyday life. • There is no known cure for Schizophrenia, but checking in with the doctor, occupational therapist, or other mental health professionals help a person with Schizophrenia recover and get on with their life's.

  6. What other kinds of support can help people with Schizophrenia? • Counseling and social support can help people with Schizophrenia. • Counseling can help with over coming fears, problems with finances, work, socializing, and interpersonal relationships. • With most treatment and support, most people who have Schizophrenia can lead to a fulfilling life instead of being miserable.
