  1. TIA’s Activities in the Areas of ICT and the Environment Anil Kripalani Chair Emerging Technologies Subcommittee 1

  2. Update • Last year’s report focused on “EIATRACK” • Program focused on tracking and analyzing environmental regulations worldwide • EIATRACK was acquired by IHS Global from TIA • TIA’s members are focused on defining sustainability for the electronics and broadband industries through collaboration with other technology associations

  3. STEP • Sustainable Technology Environments Program • A coalition of technology associations seeking to define sustainability for the broadband and electronics industry • Started by Infocomm International (A/V) • www.infocomm.org • TIA and BICSI (www.bicsi.org) joined STEP Board of Directors in 2011 3

  4. STEP • Fills void not addressed by other “green building” rating systems • Existing rating systems have not included audio/visual, communications, information technology, security or building automation systems • Need to engage all stakeholders to accomplish our sustainability goals 4

  5. What are STEP Benefits? • Tool for owners and technology providers to implement sustainable practices in their technology projects • Only focuses on the electronic information systems that operate within sustainable buildings • Establishes a position alongside LEED, Energy Star, GBI, ASHRAE 189.1 & the International Green Construction Code, among others • Eliminates silos in electronic information systems by collaborating and sharing the rewards and risks that come with a sustainable building 5

  6. Next Steps for STEP • www.thestepfoundation.org will be online soon • STEP Rating System and Guide demonstration documents to be available • Additional member associations anticipated • Pilot projects are needed to verify system and develop educational program • Foundation will seek ANSI accreditation for STEP • Note: Additional information available 6

  7. Supplementary Slides 7

  8. TR-42Telecommunications Cabling Systems • TR-42 addresses performance and requirements standards for telecommunications cabling and infrastructure in commercial and residential buildings, homes and data centers. • Data Centers, because of their high energy-use profile, have been particularly interested in energy efficiency. • TR-42 (specifically TR-42.1) has been working on adding energy efficiency content into the first revision of TIA-942. • This revision will add content on Energy Efficient Lighting (EEL) for data centers. • Data Centers, because of their profile have become a kind of proving ground for new technologies (like EEL), which can ultimately migrate into other types of premises as well. 8
