LO: understand the structure and uses of alloys What is an alloy? Most pure metals are not very useful. They must be mixed with other substances before they can be used to their full extent! A metal that contains another element is called an alloy. One of the most commonly used alloys is steel. Steel is a mixture of Iron and Carbon.
