  1. How to reference web sources Run these slides as a slideshow if possible.

  2. The key point to remember is that when you cite a published source, the purpose of the details of the reference you provide in your reference list is to allow other people/scholars to locate the source you used in your work. That is why there is so much information in a non-web reference, thus:

  3. Sample non-web reference format Author’s first initial Year of publication Author’s surname • Kennedy, G., (1989), Everything is negotiable, London: Business Books Ltd Name of publisher Title of the text Location of publisher

  4. When you create a reference to a source on the web you require an equivalent amount of data. The URL alone is not enough! http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/p71/165588.pdf

  5. The URL alone is not enough because: • websites have a habit of dying and disappearing unexpectedly • The URL may take the person looking for your source to a website that contains millions of pages and hundreds of thousands of documents written by thousands of different authors. You might as well have put : • References • A library

  6. You need instead to collect the following information and record it in your reference list:

  7. Authors’ surnames Year of publication Glueckauf, R., Whitton, J. & Baxter, J., (1998), ‘Videocounseling for families of rural teens with epilepsy -- Project update’, Telehealth News, 2, 2, http://www.telehealth.net/subscribe/newslettr4a.html1, accessed 4.11.06 Title of the text Name of publisher Location of publisher Date of access

  8. References … Glueckauf, R., Whitton, J. & Baxter, J., (1998), ‘Videocounseling for families of rural teens with epilepsy -- Project update’, Telehealth News, 2,2, http://www.telehealth.net/subscribe/newslettr4a.html1, accessed 4.11.06

  9. If the website contains a copy of a ‘full’ academic paper, then you should not refer to the website at all, but refer instead to the full details of the hard-copy published paper. For example:

  10. At the time of writing……. http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/p71/165588.pdf Took you to:

  11. Journal of Air Transport Management, 8, (2002), 141–147 ‘Internalization of airport congestion’ Jan K.Brueckner* ,1 Department of Economics, Institute of Government and Public Affairs, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1206 South Sixth Street, Champaign, IL 61820, USA Abstract This paper analyzes the internalization of airport congestion by nonatomistic carriers. It is shown that, in allocating traffic between the peak and off-peak periods, a monopolist fully accounts for the effect of congestion on passenger time costs, while also taking account of its impact on his own operating costs. The analysis thus suggests no role for congestion pricing under monopoly conditions. In an oligopoly setting, carriers are shown to internalize
