  3. Ageing • Aging is a constant predictable process that involves growth and development of living organisms • Aging cannot be avoided but how fast we age varies from one person to another

  4. Healthy Ageing • Physical, emotional, and spiritual health • Adequate financial and health care resources to sustain the latter stages of life • A balance between independent living and social support • A place to feel safe and comfortable in living a dignified life

  5. Changes related to Aging – Gender Perspective • Infancy to adulthood • Physical • Emotional • Social • Spiritual • Mental

Adopting to OLD Age • Adjusting to decreasing health and physical strength • Adjusting to retirement and reduced or fixed income • Adjusting to death of a spouse • Accepting self as aging person • Maintaining satisfactory living arrangements • Redefining relationships with adult children • Finding ways to maintain quality of life

  7. Factors that impact Healthy or Unhealthy Ageing of Seniors • Physical • Traditions from childhood to adulthood – Family , Community life • The workplace-retirement dynamics • Occupational role • Parenthood • Marriage

Social Determinants of Health • The social determinants of health that are known to be among the worst causes of poor health and inequalities between and within countries in the world. • income and its distribution • social inclusion and exclusion • employment and unemployment • working conditions • economic conditions • early life • education • food security • poor housing

Social Determinants • Socialdeterminants of health determine whether individuals stay healthy or become ill (a narrow definition of health). • Socialdeterminants of health also determine the extent to which a person possesses the physical, social and personal resources to identify and achieve personal aspirations, satisfy needs and cope with the environment (a broader definition of health). • Socialdeterminants of health are about the quantity and quality of a variety of resources that a society makes available to its members.

  11. Healthy Ageing • While the majority of older adults have a chronic condition, illness and disability are not inevitable parts of the aging process, and can be prevented or delayed.  • There is overwhelming evidence that older persons do indeed benefit from health promotion interventions. 

  12. Success in Ageing • Those individuals who age successfully generally have few health problems, adequate finances to support their current lifestyle, and minimal psychological stress.

  13. Psychosocial Changes • Changes in roles and relationships- parents become grandparents, adult children become caregivers for aging parents, or spouses become widows or widowers • Retirement • Social Isolation and loneliness • Sexuality • Housing and Environment

  14. OLD Age in Emergency • Special Needs • Injury prevention • Promotion of physical activity • Suicide prevention/ • Psychosocial counseling and physical support to reduce emotional crisis Hopelessness & Helplessness

Areas for Focus • Reducing the cost of access to Health and other social services • Improving the quality of home and institutionalized care • Addressing the shortage of geriatricians • Increasing incomes of older adults • Increasing affordable rental housing • Reducing the rate of economic crime victimization • Abolish mandatory retirement at the age of 65 yrs
