Reading In the classroom: First- Students will start with a class read aloud, or whole group lesson Then- Students build reading skills with small group instruction, digital learning tools, and independent reading w/ written response. 2nd Grade Goals: Beginning of Year =I (or higher ), Middle of Year=K, End of Year=M (or higher ) How you can help: Read with your child! *20 minutes, at least 5 nights/week. Ask questions after they read: 1-Tell what happens in the story in your own words (include beginning, middle and end) 2-At first ________feels ______ about _______. How does he feel about it later? Use a detail from the story in your answer. 3-Complete a cause and effect chart. Explain ___________. Use details from the story to explain your answer. 4-Explain why the author wrote this book. Use at least 2 key ideas from the book in your answer. (NONFICTION) *Intervention “Beacon Block will provide additional support or enrichment based on each student’s needs!

Writing In the classroom: Short whole group lessons, followed by time to write with 1:1 conferences and small group instruction. 2nd Grade Goals: Students will complete each step of the writing process; prewrite, draft, edit, revise to publish the following types of writing -personal narrative. -informational. -lab reports/science. -poetry. -response to reading Lessons will focus on patterns found in words, and vocabulary building. These lessons are integrated with reading instruction; you will not see traditional weekly “spelling lists” or tests. How you can help: Look for spelling patterns during nightly reading with your child! Ex: Can you find more words with ”ea” vowel pattern? What sound does that make in each word you find? Next time you want to write a word that has this sound, try this vowel pattern! Word Study

  4. Math In the classroom: Short whole group lessons & guided practice, followed by time for individual practice, small group support, or skill building games. Major Concepts: Number and Operations- place value to 999, add/subtract using place value & properties Measurement and Data- lengths in standard units, time & money Represent and Interpret Data- generate data & problem solve using line plots, bar graphs Geometry- reason with shapes and their attributes Operations of Algebraic Thinking- two-step word problems within 100 using addition/subtraction, add/subtract fluently within 20, equal groups to gain foundational knowledge for multiplication How you can help: • Look over work sent home in blue folder; use missed or unfinished problems as an opportunity to give your child additional practice with your support • Fact Fluency! (flash cards, matching games, speed challenges, websites)Talk about math as it happens in everyday life. • Have your child practice skills on Dreambox or MobyMax! (go to the school webpage to log on) *Intervention “Beacon Block” will provide additional support or enrichment based on each student’s needs!

  5. Social Studies Major Concepts: Resources: Integration with Reading and Math *Maps *SmartBoards *Projects *Guest Speakers *Shared Texts *Field Trips

  6. Science Teachers facilitate hands on units using; science notebooks, teacher created material, literature, and videos. Major Concepts: Earth Systems, Structures, and Processes -patterns of weather Matter: Properties & Change -solids, liquids and changes they undergo Forces & Motion -sound and vibrating objects Evolution & Genetics -organisms differ from or are similar to their parents based on the characteristics of the organism Structures & Functions of Living Organisms -animal life cycles

Volunteers / Chaperones Field Trips: We have on and off campus trips planned this year! *If you are a parent, a family member, or a community person desiring to serve as a school volunteer then you are required to have a background check.  Examples of how school volunteers may be used include field trip chaperones, classroom volunteers, assisting with enrichment opportunities,  etc.  Background checks are good for 2 years.
