David is Anointed • David was the Least Likely to be anointed the next king of Israel. • Jesse paraded all 7 of his sons before the prophet Samuel for consideration of anointing but God rejected all of them. Jesse never mentioned his youngest son because he was the Least Likely.
David is Anointed • Have you been rejected, looked over, counted out? Have others always gotten the attention because they may have been more talented, better looking, more gifted, more confident than you? • Have you ever been on someone’s least likely list?
David is Anointed • The most interesting people are the Least Likelies who somehow managed to shatter that label and excel to great heights. • Cinderella • Robin Williams • Barbra Streisand • Warren Moon • Oprah Winfrey
David is Anointed • God seems to get a divine kick out of surprising us by selecting the least among us to exalt to great heights while the most likely watches in amazement. • God chose the Least Likely nation of that time in history, through which to reveal Himself to the world; Israel. • God chose the Least Likely person to carry the Savior in her womb; Mary. • God chose the Least Likely man to anoint the Christ.
David is Anointed • Yahweh told Samuel to go to Bethlehem and anoint one of Jesse’s sons the next king of Israel. • This divine order was troubling to Samuel for he hadn’t seen King Saul since he had announced to the king that Yahweh had rejected him as king because of his disobedience.
David is Anointed • Yahweh instructed Samuel to take a heifer with him to Bethlehem and let everyone know that he had come to make a sacrifice unto the Lord. • The sacred ritual took place within the context of community worship. This was vitally important occasion for this community especially since the high priest himself came to perform the sacrifice. • They didn’t think enough of David to even invite him to this important community event.
David is Anointed • The priest sent for David and when he arrived, the Lord spoke to Samuel saying, “This is the one; anoint him.” While David stood among his brothers, Samuel anointed David with the oil. “And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on.” (1 Samuel 16:13 NLT).
David is Anointed • David grew up well aware that he was not the likely choice to be anointed the next king. For he would later boast, “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 18:22-23 NIV).
David is Anointed • You are the one • Know that God has an anointing specifically for you, because you are the one! Your anointing cannot be taken away from you by anyone except God. Your anointing is about you and no one else. • The mistake we make is coveting another man’s anointing rather than discovering and cultivating our own.
David is Anointed • The Least Likelies know that they are Least Likelies. Some of them often spend enormous amounts of time fanaticizing about getting the upper hand on others around them. They desperately want adoration and acceptance from others and to be exalted above them so that they can look down on others for a change.
David is Anointed • The anointed man of God must keep in mind that his anointing is not his doing but it is all about God. • “…the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 18:22-23 NIV).
