What is Science Olympiad? • Annual science competition • 23 individual and team events • Students focus on optimal 3-4 events • Team – 15 students per team • Compete against other San Diego middle schools in February (Division B) • Top 20 teams are placed in each event • Top 8 schools will be advanced to State • Only 1 team per school for State
Benefits • Promotes teamwork & collaboration • Improves study skills • Exposure to sciences outside of regular science class
Coach Commitment • Adherence to coaching schedules • Take attendance at each practice • Work to accommodate student interest • Advise to Head Coach Committee for team assignment • Adherence to SO General Rules & Code of Ethics • Require PUSD Volunteer Level I & II clearance
Parents Commitment • We LOVE volunteers • Looking for additional coaches • Need at least one parent to support coach during weekly training session. Additional parent volunteers needed for building events. • Need help on Competition Day, T-Shirt & Team Banner Design • Need PUSD Volunteers Level I clearance • Adherence to SO General Rules & Code of Ethics
Sponsorship/Wish List • Supplies – storage containers, clipboards, paper, markers, rulers • Equipment - goggle, lab coat, beaker, pipette, scale, architecture map(Road Scholar), lab meter stick, magnifier glasses • Materials for Robo-Cross, Bridge building, Bottle rocket, Wheeled Vehicle • Team T-Shirt • Team Banner • Corporate Match – please contact Head Coach Committee if your employer offers Corporate Match
Student Commitment • 14-16 weeks of training: Sept 22-Feb 6 • 3-6 hours per week (Prepare 3-4 events is optimal) • Attendance & participation at all trainings • Completion of work assigned by coach(es) • Adherence to D39C SO Policy and SO General Rules & Code of Ethics

Important Dates • September 4th, 2014 (Thurs) - Parents Info Night / Coaches Meeting • September 19th, 2014 (Fri) - Last day to register (all paperwork, parents permission slip and donation turned in to consider completed the registration) • September 23nd, 2014(Tue) - Training begins this week • November 15th, 2014(Sat) – Event Workshop @ RBMS • Mid November, 2014 – Finalize Team Roster • January 30th, 2015 (Fri) - D39C Pre-Regional Science Olympiad meeting • February 7th, 2015 (Sat) - Regional Science Olympiad Competition • April 4th, 2015 (Sat) - State Science Olympiad Competition • Spring 2015 (Sat) – D39C Science Olympiad Post-Event Picnic
Registration • Student and Parents review National Science Olympiad website(www.soinc.org) and decide what events you are interested in and rank them in priority order • Complete the online registration, make sure click “Submit” at the end • Review & Sign • D39C Policy & Parent Permission • SO Code of Ethics document • San Diego SO Hold Harmless Agreement Form • $100 donation per student to help fully fund the SO team. • Team Registration • Supplies, study/building materials and coaching CDs • Turn in your completed forms and donation to D39C Welcome Center. Please staple your check and forms together and label it for ‘Science Olympiad’ • Registration 9/8 – 9/19/2014
