Evaluating IEEE 802.16 Broadband Wireless as a Communications Infrastructure for Public Safety Activities Demonstration 7/2/2007 J. Martin, M. Westall Department of Computer Science Clemson University jim.martin/westall@cs.clemson.edu
Overview • Summary of current research and project status • Demo the M/A-COM gear • Next steps • Proposal for year 2
Summary of Current Research: DOCSIS Cable Systems • We have developed a simulation model and analytic models. • Cisco has ‘donated’ equipment allowing us to build a DOCSIS cable testbed • Research objectives: • Explore current limitations of DOCSIS • Propose and evaluate enhancements • Example: problem is that a small number of high bandwidth subscribers can seriously impact the call quality of best effort VoIP (e.g., Vonage style telephony) • Problem: DOCSIS favors high bandwidth flows Toll quality
Summary of Current Research: WiMAX • Participating with the WiMAX Forum’s Application Working Group to develop WiMAX simulation models. • Research interests involve: • Performance analysis • Protocol improvement • Security vulnerabilities
WiMAX Tutorial • Specifications • 802.16d : ‘fixed’ WiMAX • Single Base Station, point-to-multipoint • Roaming supported by layer 2 or layer 3 • Can support a slow moving vehicle if in range • 802.16e : ‘mobile’ WiMAX • Sectors – like cell based system, point-to-multipoint • Roaming supported by WiMAX • Can support a vehicle moving <40mph • Both modes combined in a single IEEE standard 802.16e-2005 published 2/28/2006 • Performance (assuming low volume of competing traffic) • 20 Mbps over 10 miles if clear line of sight • 2 Mbps over 1 mile in city areas
WiMAX Tutorial Our Preference: 4.9 GHz 2.5/3.5 GHz licensed 5.8GHz unlicensed Possible WiMAX Bands for Public Safety Possible WiMAX Bands for Commercial Use
The Clemson Proposal: Year 1 • Build a testbed with ‘first’ generation WiMAX equipment at Clemson University • University, city, and state public safety organizations will participate in the evaluation • Develop ‘best practices’ document for deploying and managing WiMAX networks for public safety operations
Critical Questions • How can WiMAX best help public safety organizations? • Guidance towards spectrum and equipment choices • What are the applications to be studied? • Any tools that can help with deployment issues?
Year 1 Work Items • Task 1: Testbed • Design network, select equipment • Deploy network and establish baseline validation • Task 2: Evaluation • Working with local fire and police organizations, select applications • Develop our own test applications • Perform evaluation • Task 3: Disseminate results • Develop guidebook that identifies WiMAX network best practices for public safety missions • Present project at a public safety conference • Timeline: • Task 1 • Complete end of July • Task 2 • Scenarios loosely defined in the Workshop held March 2007 • Test applications deployed in Task 1 • Evaluation complete end of August • Task 3 • Guidebook complete by 9/30/2007
Equipment: 1 BS, 4 SSs Base station : 4.9 GHz Hardened BS (MAVM-VMXDB) Client station: 4.9 GHz Low Power Hardened Client (MAVM-VMCLH)
M/A-COM Equipment • Airlink: • IEEE 802.16e function – although just supports Fixed/Nomadic clients • 5MHz channels at 4.9GHz • 27dBm output power • TDD operation, 10ms frame time, variable US/DS split • Interfaces: • RJ-45 Ethernet • 24 V DC Power • 4.9 GHz RF and GPS Antenna • Managed by M/A-COM UAS Admin software

Validation • Applications • TCP/UDP network performance test tools • VoIP using Asterisk • Video streaming • IndigoVision surveillance camera • Plan to order high end, rugged Pelco analog PTZ camera (SpectraIV) with IndigoVision 9000E Encoder (with analytics and video mgt software) • Camcorder • Web Cams
Validation • Metrics (beyond the lab) • External statistics from performance tools (RTT, jitter, loss, throughput) • Extract SNMP statistics from the BS and SS • Application specific metrics: • VoIP stats • Streaming stats • Methodology (beyond the lab) • For a given deployment, create a MAP that correlates performance (application performance, power levels) to location • Develop a 4.9 GHz channel model and contribute this to the WiMAX Forum
Testbed Trial Scenarios • Deployment #1: campus-wide/city coverage • Deployment #2: event coverage
Deployment #1: Area Coverage • Broadband wireless coverage of portions of campus
Deployment #2: Event Coverage • Broadband wireless coverage setup for football game day
Year 2 Plan • Task 1: Extend the testbed with mobile WiMAX • Task 2: Validate impact of mobility on public safety applications • Task 3: Address the issue of handling large amounts of video during public safety events • Task 4: Further our involvement with the WiMAX Forum • Task 5: Disseminate results and lessons learned
