FOLKTALE The Heron and the Crab Panchatantra: A long time ago, there lived a heron, by the side of a pond brimming with fresh fsh. He was a lazy creature, who wanted to fnd a way to catch all the fsh without any efort. One day, he got an idea! He went to the side of the pond and put on a gloomy face. His friend, the crab, came alongside him and asked, “What is bothering you, my dear friend?” The heron said, “Alas, my friends! I spotted fshermen making hungry nets in the village nearby! Soon, they will come to our pond, to catch all the fsh.” On hearing this, the inhabitants of the pond were devastated. The heron said, “Luckily, I know of a pond not far from here, where all the fsh will be saved.” So, everyday, some fsh would volunteer to be carried in the heron’s beak, to the safe pond. The heron would take the fsh each day and on reaching a large rock, he would eat all the fsh, leaving nothing but their bones behind. For many days, the sly heron got a continued supply of fsh without any efort. But the wise crab was suspicious of the heron’s motives and one day, volunteered to go with the heron to the new pond. As they were fying, the crab was shocked to see his friends’ bones lying around the rock. He realized there was something fshy going on, but chose to wait and watch. The heron took the crab to the rock to eat him up. Seeing this, the alert crab tightened its claws around the heron’s long neck and threatened to choke him. “Please, spare me!” cried the scared heron, knowing his game was up. The wise and merciful crab let go of the heron’s neck, who promised never to be so deceitful again. The wise crab had saved the day.

CASA & ASA Discoveries and Inventions Who discovered visible light? Electromagnetic radiation is a form of energy. Radio waves, microwaves, X-rays and gamma rays are some of the forms of electromagnetic radiation. Sunlight is also a form of electromagnetic energy, but visible light is only a small portion of the spectrum, which contains a broad range of electromagnetic wavelengths. Aristotle was responsible for one of the frst theories of light. He stated that, “The essence of light is white light. Colors are made up of a mixture of lightness and darkness.” However, it was Sir Isaac Newton who conducted several experiments to understand light. And how light is composed of several wavelengths. In his book, Optiks, Newton describes how he used prisms to disassemble and reassemble light. Visible light falls in the spectrum between infra red and ultra violet, the wavelengths easily visible to the human eye. Violet has the short- est wavelength, at around 380 nanometers, and red has the longest wavelength, at around 700 nanometers. Cone-shaped cells in our eyes act as receivers tuned to the wavelengths in this narrow band of the spectrum. Other portions of the spectrum have wavelengths too large or too small and energetic for the biological limitations of our perception. Visible light is only a small portion of the spectrum, which contains a broad range of electromagnetic wavelengths. 3

Questions about the English Language English is the Official English seems to be the ofcial language all over the world. Plus, it is the ofcial language of the sky! It doesn’t matter which country they are from, all pilots speak in English on international fights. Even if you were to go to a country like Africa, the language spoken by the pilots would still be English. This is because it is the language which is understood and learnt by almost everyone around the world. These days the skies are so busy that accurate communication is most important. Communication lapses and errors can occur if diferent languages are used for diferent zones. So, English is ofcially used in the aviation industry worldwide to avoid any miscommunication. Imagine if the pilot of a plane landing in Africa from India communicated with ground control in Hindi, they wouldn’t understand a thing and may not let the plane land! 4

You don't feel hungry, your tummy growls and grumbles all day long and you feel uneasy.There are several things you can do to avoid getting an overheated summer tummy. All of these suggestions are simple and involve things you can fnd around the house! Infusing your water with 'sabja' or sweet basil seeds helps in reducing the amount of heat trapped in the stomach and body. Sweet basil seeds, commonly confused with chia seeds, are high in antioxidants and have cooling properties. They are best used after soaking in water. As they turn gelatinous after soaking, they're easiest to drink by putting them into your drinking water bottle. Treat yourself to cooling fruits and vegetables, high in water content. These fruits and vegetables are easy to digest and don't put a strain on your body. Load up on cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, muskmelon, honeydew melon and gourds which have high water content. Wash everything down with lots of fresh coconut water and homemade lemonade. Fresh herbs are a must in this weather, with mint being the star of the season. Add freshly chopped mint and coriander to all of your salads. Mint can also be added to brighten up your homemade lemonade and coriander tastes delicious when added to a freshly blended buttermilk. Take advantage of the fruits available in the summer. 5

AMUSING NEWS Ostrich Trains for Tour de France A pair of cyclists were warming up early one morning and came upon the most amazing sight. As they began to cycle on a stretch of empty road, the turned around to see an ostrich racing behind them, almost overtaking their cycles. They're sure they'll be seeing the ostrich participate in the Tour de France sometime soon!

The children had to make a car on their own, which they think would be used in the future, 50 years from now. Martin said,“If they wanted us to make a car which already exists, I would have asked my father to just buy an exact miniature model.”

Nitin laughed and said, “The contest is not about who has more money. It is about creating something innovative.” The science class started and the teacher discussed renewable sources of energy. How wind energy was being used to run turbines for agriculture. How steam was used to create electricity. How some villages in India had also ad- opted solar energy to produce electricity, for simple chores like heating the water and major areas like agriculture and even transportation. The bell struck, but Eeshan kept thinking about what the teacher had spoken about in the class. As Eeshan, Nitin and Martin were walking towards the canteen for a lunch break, Eeshan screamed, “Eureka!” Nitin asked, “What is it Eeshan?”

“I know we can take part in the automobile show and possibly win too! Let’s enroll our names. Martin, we can talk to your uncle who owns the garage uptown. I am sure he will be a great help. And let us rope in our science teacher as the volunteer teacher in our team. We will make a car that runs on solar energy!” explained Eeshan. “It will be great if we can do it!” said Martin They enrolled themselves and along with their science teacher, went straight to Martin’s uncle. They knew they had two weeks to make their model and participate, but they also knew making the car would not be easy. Martin’s uncle was a huge help. First, they made the car chassis with a strong cardboard. They fit wooden wheels from Eeshan’s wooden car using a pin to create the holes. Martin’s uncle helped to put a small motor pulley on the motor shaft that would help drive the car using the solar energy. 9

On the day of the contest, they carried their small car to the ground. Lucki- ly the sun in Allepey was shining brightly as usual. They connected the drive belt and the car began to run on solar energy. The other children marveled while the teachers from other schools applauded. Predictably, they were declared winners for creating something so novel, yet doable. Einstein Iyengar and his friends were declared heroes of the school, yet again! 10

The shape and size of the fufy white stuf in the sky is afected by a combination of factors like the temperature of the atmosphere, or the amount of water vapour present. We also have to take into consider- ation whether they are in the high, middle, or lower part of the atmosphere. Clouds have 4 diferent classifcations with a Latin name - CUMULUS The pufy clouds that look like foating pieces of cotton in the sky are known as cumulus clouds. They form relatively low in the earth’s atmosphere, at around 1 km above the surface- when hot air rises and condenses in the sky. They can appear alone or as one big mass, and are often the precursor to other types of clouds. STRATUS Stratus clouds are those which appear to be a haze in the sky. The term is used to describe any cloud that is fat, hazy, and featureless; that hangs low above the surface of the earth and can be dark gray to almost white. When you are talking about a cloudy day, it is likely that you are saying that the sky is flled with stratus clouds. NIMBUS Any cloud that produces precipitation whether rain, hail, sleet, or snow is known as a nimbus cloud. Since they are dense with water, they appear to be a gray colour. The prefx nimbo or sufx nimbus is added to the names of other clouds when they become large enough to produce precipitation. For example, cumulus – cumulonimbus and stratus – nimbo- stratus. CIRRUS The type of cloud that looks like someone has taken a broom and made long sweeping marks across the sky is known as a cirrus cloud. They are formed high in the atmosphere, around 6 km up- and have this appearance because the wind blows them into this formation, as the water vapour condenses. Cirrus clouds are always thin, and you can always see the sun or moon through them. Clouds are formed when water vapour rises and condenses 11

Just after this the lark returned, When from her brood this news she learned. "Ah! dearest mother," then, said they, "Pray, let us all begone to-day." "My dears," said she, "you need not fret, I shall not be uneasy yet; For if he waits for neighbor's aid, The business long will be delay'd." The morrow proved the lark was right; For all was cut and housed by night. At dawn she left her nest once more, And charged her young ones as before. At fve the farmer came again, And waited for his friends in vain, "Well," said the man, "I fancy, son, These friends we can't depend upon; To-morrow early, mind you go, And let our own relations know." 12
