  2. Goals for this Session • To learn about the successful collaborative processes in place at VT. • To learn about the Transfer Equivalency Database. • To learn about student and university benefits from our collaborative processes.

  3. Overview of Transfer Orientation • One Day • Subcommittee of Orientation Management Team (O-Team) • Key Departments Involved • Support Areas Involved

Transfer Subcommittee of the Orientation Management Team • Meets monthly September through May • Members • Director of Orientation • Representative from each of Six Academic Colleges • Representative from University Academic Advising Center • Assistant Registrar for Transfer Credit • Representative from Hokie Passport Office • Representative from Admissions Office • Representative from Center for Academic Enrichment and Excellence

Work of the Transfer Subcommittee • Pre-preparations • Transfer Credit Assessment and problem solving with transfer credit issues • Selecting Orientation dates • Planning the schedule and the activities for the orientation day • Having a collective voice with Admissions on issues having to do with Admissions • Helping to recruit Transfer Orientation Guides (TOGS)

Transfer Equivalency Database(TEDB) • Two and Four-year Schools • Under constant review • Adding courses year round • Maintained by the University Registrar’s Office • Equivalents are determined by Department offering the course at VT http://www.registrar.vt.edu/tranguide/index.html (Go to page 5 in your handout to see full page printouts of the Transfer Equivalency Database.)

  13. 2007 Transfer Orientation Schedule 7:45-9:00 a.m. Check-In 8:00-9:15 a.m. Student Resources Fair 9:30-10:15 a.m. University Welcome 10:15-11:00 a.m. Students – Lunch with Transfer Orientation Guides and discussion on Academic Success and Student Services Parents – Parent Information Session 11:00- 11:45 a.m. Lunch Noon-5:00 p.m. Advising and Registration 1:00-5:00 p.m. Off-Campus Housing Information and Campus Tours

Student Outcomes – Benefits • Have a full schedule before they leave orientation • Know what transfer credits they have before they leave orientation • Trouble shoot problems with transfer credit • Get to know advisors and departmental representatives • Become familiar with institutional support services

  15. Student Outcomes - Benefits • Learn to navigate Hokie Spa • Get to know the University • Introduced to Course of Study Planner • Receive information on graduation requirements • Have a smoother transition

VT Outcomes - Benefits • Advised approximately 85% of transfer students • Improved the process and efficiency of evaluating and awarding transfer credit • Approximately 75% of all transfer credit has been evaluated and awarded • Coordinated all support services • Developed strong network between other University Constituents • Received positive feedback from students • Achieved high level of student satisfaction

  17. Conclusion Collaborative initiatives will continue at Virginia Tech in order to further improve the transfer process for our transfer students We are Virginia Tech We will prevail! We are inventing the future.
