  2. STRESS • When a word ends in a vowel, n, or s the stress falls on the next to last syllable. Ca ba llo (horse), e xa men (exam), e llos(they)

  3. STRESS • When a word ends in a consonant, (except n or s, of course) the stress falls on the last syllable. es pa ñol (Spanish), ciu dad (city)

  4. STRESS • When the pronunciation of a word does not fit any of the other rules, a written accent is required to show which syllable to stress. ca fé (coffee), ár bol (tree) • Sometimes written accents distinguish different functions or meanings of words that have the same spelling. Tú (you - subject pronoun) / tu (your - possessive adjective) dé (give - verb) / de (of, from - preposition) sí (yes) / si (if)

  5. Stress • Certain pronouns such as que, quien(es), cual(es), cuanto(a), cuantos(as), and certain adverbs such as cuando, donde have a written accent when they are used as question words (interrogatives). ¿Cuándo vas a estudiar? (When are you going to study?) ¿Quiénes vienen? (Who is coming?)
