  2. What is stress • Reaction of the body and mind to everyday challenges and demands • Running late • Can’t find something important • Missing the bus • Championship game • Argument with a friends

Stress is different for everyone • Perception – the act of become aware through the senses • Change how you perceive and react to events • Your perception and reaction to an event can increase or decrease the amount of stress you feel • Stress is not always good or bad but it can have good or negative effects • People do well under pressure and some people may lose sleep

  4. Causes of stress • Stressor – anything that causes stress • Biological stressors • Environmental stressors • Thinking stressors • Personal behavior stressors • Life situation stressors

  5. The stress response • Response controlled by the endocrine and nervous system • 3 stages of the response • Alarm • Resistance • Fatigue

  6. Alarm Body and mind go on high alert Adrenal glands secrete adrenaline

  7. Resistance • Your body adapts to the rush created by alarm and reacts • You either “fight” or take “flight” • “fight” – your able to resist/perform a physical challenge • “flight” – your able to run faster/longer to escape danger

  8. Fatigue • Body loses its ability to adapt to the situation • A tired feeling takes over • Physical fatigue • Psychological fatigue • Pathological fatigue

  9. Stress and your health • Physical Effects • Headache • Asthma • High blood pressure • Weakened immune system • Mental/Emotional and Social Effects • Difficulty concentrating • Mood swings • Risks of substance abuse

  10. Controlling Stress Physical activity Support from family and friends Hobbies and activities Avoid harmful substances

  11. Homework Think of a stressor that could happen early in the day. Write a small paragraph that describes how that small stressor early in the day can affect the rest of a person’sday. (Domino Effect)
