The BurrenLIFE Project – a targetedlocal solution Project Budget: €2.23m, 75% from the EU LIFE Nature Fund Partners: National Parks and Wildlife Service (€375,122) Teagasc (€169,900), Burren IFA (€12,600) Timeframe: February 2005 – April 2010 Winner ‘Best of the Best’ Award for LIFE Nature Projects in Europe 2010! Objective: To develop a new model for sustainable farming on the priority habitats of the Burren.
The goal: The roll out of BFCP across the Burren under RDP 2014 – 2020 to a target area 30,000ha (c. 650 farmers, €4.5m annual cost) The vision: Thriving Burren communities, managing outstanding local environments A Vision for all the Stakeholders
Verifiable improvement in site conditions • Massive reduction in silage feeding • Major investment in improving site infrastructure • Major investment in local economy • High approval rating from all involved
Challenge is incorporating these lessons into future agri-environment schemes
