Will you be well? Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” (John 5:1-6 NIV) • Some time later Jesus went up to the United States for a feast of the believers. Now there is in the US near Region 9 a pool, which in English is called the mission field and which is surrounded by the five colonnades of program units and synods and seminaries and congregations and $20 billion in assets. Here a great number of disabled mainline denominations used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. The ELCA was there and had been an invalid for many years. When Jesus saw them lying there and learned that they had been in this condition for a long time, he asked them, “Do you want to get well?” (John 5:1-6 interpreted)

WHAT LEGACY? WHAT LEGACY? WHAT REFORMATION? WHAT CROSS? WHAT NOW? African Americans in the Lutheran Church “…proceeded on the assumption that spiritual conversion was contingent on cultural conversion. That assumption is theologically untenable and psychologically and socially unacceptable… In the twentieth century, the Lutheran Church continued its attempt at cultural conversion, but that has been obscured largely by the adoption of policies of integration (adopted in 1947) or inclusiveness (adopted in 1964).”

WHAT REFORMATION? WHAT LEGACY? WHAT REFORMATION? reformatasemperreformandaest: “The reformed church is always reforming.”
WHAT REFORMATION? WHAT LEGACY? WHAT REFORMATION? “Forthrightly stated, integration/inclusiveness (as understood and practiced by the Lutheran Church) would say that black people may come into the church if they hear the Gospel, speak the Gospel, and worship and live by the Gospel as Euro-Americans do. The black vote as been loud and clear on this point. They don’t want to be integrated/included so much as they want to be empowered. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that after 300 years there are only 132,000 black Lutherans in the United States.”
WHAT CROSS? WHAT LEGACY? WHAT REFORMATION? WHAT CROSS? “So brothers and sisters, since God has shown us great mercy, I beg you to offer your lives as a living sacrifice. Your offering must be only for God and pleasing to him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship. Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect. Because God has given me a special gift, I have something to say to everyone among you. Do not think you are better than you are. You must decide what you really are by the amount of faith God has given you. Each one of us has a body with many parts, and these parts all have different uses.5 In the same way, we are many, but in Christ we are all one body. Each one is a part of that body, and each part belongs to all the other parts.” (Romans 12:1-5 NCV)
