  4. Not Just Another Work Day • Why is the time around Thanksgiving traditionally a major shopping period?

  5. Black Friday • Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. • This is when many stores offer specials and deals. • Instead of opening on Friday really early, like 5 am, stores are now opening on Thanksgiving.

  6. Not Just Another Work Day • Why would a retail store such as Wal-mart or Target want to stay open on Thanksgiving?

  7. Simple Economics • Think about Supply and Demand. • If customers want to shop there is a demand for stores to stay open. • If stores offer great bargains, there is a supply for customers to want to go shopping. • Could this change?

  8. Not Just Another Work Day • What are reasons why someone might have a problem with stores being open on Thanksgiving day?

  9. History of Thanksgiving • 1621- First Thanksgiving feast with Pilgrims and Native Americans. Although they had lost over half of their population, the Pilgrims were happy to have had a successful crop. • 1863- Thanksgiving becomes Federal Holiday. Abraham Lincoln declared this a national holiday months following the devastating battle of Gettysburg.

  10. NY Post Article “Black Friday’s two-way war on the poor” By Nicole Gelinas • Read the article. Do NOT write on it this article! It will be used in every class. • Find evidence to support why stores should and should not be open on Thanksgiving.

  11. Note Taking Sheet • Complete the note taking sheet with the evidence you have found • Include your own ideas too. • Challenge: See if you can fill up your note sheet.

  12. What can we do to make a difference? How can we change this problem?
