In your Vocabulary Section • Civics – the study of citizens rights and duties • Citizen – community members that owe loyalty to the government and are entitled to protections from it. • Naturalization – a legal process to obtain citizenship • Alien – a noncitizen • Immigrant – a person who moves permanently to a new country
In your Vocabulary Section • Deportation – to send an alien or immigrant back to his or her own country • Democracy – a government where citizens hold the power to rule • Consent – to give permission; to allow • Representative – type of government where citizens choose a smaller group to govern them. • Volunteerism – the practice of offering your time and services to others without payment.
