  2. Historical Significance • The Vietnam War ended. • April 30th, 1975 • OPEC agrees to raise oil prices by 10%. • The Unemployment Rate in the U.S. reaches 9.2%. • Recession is recognized by President Ford. These historical and important events occurred in the late 1970s, mainly from 1975.

  3. Historical Significance • Events of 1980 • Existence of one of Saturn’s moons, Janus, was discovered due to the Voyager 1 probe. • Mount Saint Helens in Washington erupts. • May 18th, 1980 • Very large disaster with severe loss of life, and much damage.

  5. Popular Culture • Bruce Springsteen releases his third album. • Called “Born to Run”. • Regarded as one of the greatest of all time. • Muhammad Ali beat Joe Fraser in the match known as “Thriller in Manilla”

  6. Popular Culture • “Saturday Night Live” makes its debut on NBC. • The Who’s “Tommy” appears in film version in London, England. • “The Godfather Part II” is the first sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. • Sara Jane Moore attempts to assassinate President Ford.

  7. Events and News World-Wide United States New York avoided bankruptcy when President Ford signed a $2.3 billion dollar loan. U.S. pulls out of Cambodia. First every “Strike by Doctors” occurs. Hospitals reduce services. • Oil prices go over $13.00 per barrel. • The Suez Canal reopens for the first time since the Six-Day War. • Iceland extends its fishing rights to 200 miles. • Cod War breaks out between Iceland & Britan.

Technology • Motorolla acquired the patent for the first portable mobile phone. • Construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System begins. • Sony introduces Betamax videotapes and Matsushita. • JVC introduces the VHS. • Work on Alaskan Oil line begins. • NASA launches the Viking 1 planetary probe to Mars. • In 1980, the “computer age” began.

Economy and Money • Average income for a person each year was about $14, 100.00 in 1975. • By 1980, average income per year had upped to about $19, 170. • Economic growth rates were considerably lower than preceding decades. • Not as bad as the depression of the 1930s, however. • Oil shock of 1979 • U.S. manufacturing industries began to decline as result.

Prices • Milk • $1.57 per gallon. • Eggs • $0.77 per dozen. • Gasoline • $0.44-$0.57 per gallon of gasoline. • A new car • Averaging around $4, 250.00 Since 1975 to 1980, you can see, when you compare them to today’s prices, that there is a drastic increase. Take a look at a gallon of gasoline, especially, we’re now paying $3.00+!

  18. Price of a House • Average cost of a New House • Around $39, 500.00 in January of 1975. • By December of 1980, the price was $81, 400.00. • Average Monthly Rent • $200/month.

Inflation • Yearly inflation rate of the U.S. was 9.2% in 1975. • By 1980, the yearly inflation rate was 13.58%. • In just five years, the rate increased by 4.38%. • Yearly inflation rate of the UK was 24.2% In the year 1975, inflation in the United States was fairly low,. Between the U.S. and the United Kingdom, there was a difference of 15%.

The United StatesBicentennial • Sunday, July 4th, 1976 • 200 years after the Declaration of Independence was adopted. • Special celebrations included: • Currencies printed with a bicentennial design • A contest was held to choose the design and over 1,000 designs were submitted. • The chosen design was to be featured on the quarter, half dollar, and silver dollar.

The United StatesBicentennial (Continued) • Other national festivities included: • A special Bicentennial flag. • Spectacular, elaborate firework displays • Set off mostly over the nation’s major cities. • Parades, both nautical and on land. • Local observances of the bicentennial included: • Painting fire hydrants red, white, and blue.

Disco Era • Disco peaked in society from the mid to late 1970s. • Particularly took over from 1974-1978. • Disco songs topped the music charts. • The James Bond film “The Spy Who Loved Me” became one of the first films to be garnered with disco music. This era began around the late 1960s to early 1970s, and then proceeded to grow and carry on until about the early 1980s.

International Women’s Year • United Nations named the year 1975 to be known as International Women’s Year. • March 8th has been celebrated as International Women’s Day since this. • United Nation’s Decade for Women was also recognized. • 1976-1985 The first World Conference for Women was held in Mexico City from June 19th-July 2nd. Notable for passing the first “Zionism vs. racism” declaration. A number of institutions developed from the focus on women during this year.

Founding of Microsoft • Established on April 4th, 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen • Developed to sell BASIC Interpreters for the Altair 8800. • The company eventually rose to dominate the home computer operating system in the mid 1980s. A company we all know very well, Microsoft was first established in 1975 and has grown extremely successful since then; they now dominate the world of computers.
