Topics • When it comes to religion and foods certain religions have strict dietary guidelines to abide by • Islam- Has To eat food that is not Haram • Judaism- A person must eat only Kosher food • Jain- In this religion A person cannot eat any formally living being or a being that could feel pain
Judaism • There are strict dietary guidelines in the Judaism belief, Jews are suppose to eat only a certain type of food, which is called Kosher • In this day in age in a recent study it stated that only 17% Jewish families only eat Kosher meat all the time
Kosher Company Symbols • The top symbol stands for Beis Din of Crown Heights Vaad Hakashrus (which is the company) • The Bottom symbol stands for Blue Ribbon Kosher
Seven Rules to Follow • Some animals cannot be eaten at all, but it also includes, flesh, organs, eggs and milk of the forbidden animals • Birds and Mammals must be killed in accordance with Jewish law • All blood must be drained or broiled out before eaten • Certain parts of permitted animals cannot be eaten • Meat (the flesh of birds and mammals) cannot be eaten with dairy. Fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables and grains can be eaten with either meat or dairy. (According to some views, fish may not be eaten with meat).

Utensils that have come into contact with non-kosher food may not be used with kosher food. This applies only where the contact occurred while the food was hot 7) Grape products made by non-Jews may not be eaten
Food That Cannot Be Eaten • Cannot eat animals that died by naturally • Cannot eat animals killed by another animal • Blood • A diseased animal • Chelev a type of fat
Food that cannot be eaten cont… • Rabbit, Pig, Dog, Cat, or Horse • No Birds of Prey can be eaten • All Shellfish such as shrimp, lobster, and clams ect… And Crustaceans Crabs, Crayfish ect…
Prepping of the Meat • Ritual slaughter is known as shechitah, and the person who performs the slaughter is called a shochet. • The blade used in the slaughter can have no nicks or unevenness, and must be sharp • In some communities the Rabbi and the Shochet are the same person
Cooking • In a kosher household people must have a minimum of two sets of pots, pans and dishes. One for meat the other for Dairy • A person cannot cook or serve meat and fish together because it is considered unhealthy
Jain Religion • Very Pacifist • Will not cause harm to anyone or any thing that can feel pain or move on its own free will • They do not eat food that has had any possibility of having living life in it
Five Things Jains Cannot Eat • Anything involving injury or death of a moving animal • Cannot eat something that may kill or injure a creature that depends on that object for survival. Example- a root in the ground • Any intoxicants. Example- alcohol • Things that are of no use to the body. Example- Saliva, or Urine • Anything that causes harm to the health of a animal, Vegetable, or object
Vegetables That Cannot Be Eaten • There are a couple of Vegetables that people in the Jain religion cannot eat • Carrots, Radishes, tuber root… just to name a few • All root vegetables cannot be eaten in case a small living being in on it
Food that Cannot be Eaten • Meat because to eat it would mean to have cause it harm and pain • Non pure water-because it may have small organisms in it (some people in the religion apply to this) • Roots of any vegetable • Honey, (because honey is a excretion) or Eggs (because the chick could have lived) • Alcohol • * Can drink milk because it does not cause the animal pain
Islam Basics Muslims can eat Halal food but cannot eat Haram food Halal: means lawful or permitted Haram: means unlawful or prohibited
Haram Products • Pork and any by-products of it • Animals not properly slaughtered or dead before slaughter • Animals killed in the name of anyone but ALLAH (God) • Intoxicants; such as Alcohol • Carnivorous animals, birds of prey and land animals without external ears • Blood and blood by-products • Foods that contain any of the products above
Questionable Products • Foods that contain certain products such as • Gelatin • Enzymes • Emulsifiers • These are called Mashbooh because the origin of these ingredients is not known

Things in Common • Each religion has dietary restrictions • Each religion cannot eat a specific type of meat, a example would be pork and any by-products of it, except for Jain where you can eat no meat • In the Jain religion and in the Islamic religion neither can have intoxicants
Questions • If another country took over the country that you were currently in, and made rules where you had to eat the food that was forbidden in your religion would you do it? • If you needed nourishment and the food available was allowed to be eaten but was not ritually slaughtered would you eat?
