Unit 1. Race/Ethnicity. Introductions. My name is Brian Bedard. I currently teach at Detroit Catholic Central in Novi, MI and Washtenaw Community College. I taught for five years at Redford Thurston High School, before trying a career change.

Introductions • My name is Brian Bedard. I currently teach at Detroit Catholic Central in Novi, MI and Washtenaw Community College. • I taught for five years at Redford Thurston High School, before trying a career change. • I missed the classroom and went back to Eastern to recertify and was hired by Detroit Catholic Central in May 2008. • Earned a Masters in Educational Technology from MSU in May 2012 • This is my first class in the educational Leadership Program
Introductions cont. Kris I have taught middle school and high school Spanish for the past 10 years. I am currently teaching 8th grade Spanish at Pioneer Middle School in Plymouth-Canton I am about half-way in my Masters program
Introductions cont. Ellen • I've taught vocational horticulture at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti for the past 11 years. • Interested in learning all I can about teaching and the administration of schools
Brief Questionaire • Answer the questionnaire individually • Small groups-- compare your answers with your group. Who's right? Can you convince your group your answer is right? • So, what's the right answer???? • Why did your group decide on those answers?
Answers as it relates to Unit 1 • We have certain espoused values • These values cause us to perceive the world in a certain way • Unit 1 discussed this in the videos
The Color of Fear • Roundtable discussion • All Men (2 African American, 2 White men, 4 Asian American and one Hispanic) • Attempt to be an "open" discourse • Lot of tension • Issues to be resolved
Dr. Phil Video • Brought people of many racial and ethnical backgrounds together and had a comfortable and open environment where people discussed their espoused values • Used comedy to talk about the differences or perceived differences
Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible • What does it mean to be white in America? • Provided first person accounts of several white individuals and their realization of the privilege they had. • It scared them and struck them.
Racism in America Videos • Series of funny videos about racism • Style of the videos were similar to "Wayne's World movies" where the scenarios were paused and the individual talked to the camera • Told through the eyes of the person being verbally assaulted and put a funny spin on things.

Why is it important that we discuss race and ethnicity discussion as a part of our program? How does race/ethnicity affect us as educators/administrators?
