Accelerating European Excellence: FP7 Preparations and Strategic Decisions

Summary of Accelerator R&D projects presented at the CARE06 meeting in Frascati on November 16, 2006. This gathering focused on preparing for FP7 calls, launching new projects, and seeking Letters of Intent for R&D projects. ESGARD recommended continuing CARE/NED programs and emphasized prioritizing luminosity upgrades, super-beams, synchrotron designs, and beta-beams. Working groups were established to develop consistent research activities aligning with CERN Council's Strategy Document. The next steps entail setting priorities, identifying needed resources, and appointing coordinators. ESGARD will convene on December 5th for further assessments.

  1. CARE06 R. Aleksan CARE06 meeting Frascati, November 16, 2006 • Preparing FP7 • Conclusion

  2. Summary of Accelerator R&D projects • These projects are well structured, with clear objectives, deliverablesand milestones. They represent a fantastic strength for the HEP European community in order to play a leadership role • In the improvement of present accelerators • In the development of new accelerators

  3. ESGARD actions 2 meetings: May 19 and September 12, 2006 Major Strategic decisions Launching new projects ESGAR recommends continuing CARE/NED program from 2007 on with the construction of test magnets Preparing for FP7 calls

  4. Includes 2 parts: bottom-up (all fields) and targeted (thematic)

  5. For indication: proposition budget profile from the commission (march 2006)

  6. ESGARD actions Call for Letters of Intent for accelerator R&D project With a deadline on April 28th . So as to have a first scope of the ideas of the community by the Zeuthen meeting • “We would like at this point to explore how our community could propose a • coherent set of projects in an organized manner. • To this end, we would like to make a call for Letters of Intent for R&D projects. • These proposals could be • Joint Research Activities (JRA), to be included in I3 proposals, such as the ones in CARE • Design Study (DS) projects, such EUROTeV or EURISOL • Construction of New R&D Infrastructures (CNI-RD), such as a test facility. It should be noted that ESGARD is only concerned by the new infrastructure for carrying accelerator R&D and not the accelerators project for carrying physics programmes.”

  7. 34+ letters received 248 M€ + ?

  8. Main calls with closing dates spring 2007

  9. Main calls with closing dates spring 2008 (~160) (~120)

  10. Summary timetable FP7 * Closing date

  11. ESGARD recommendations Given the calendar of the calls planned, ESGARD recommends to submit all the Design Studies of the LoI list in the fist call early 2007. Considering the proposals received so far, ESGARD recommends the following priorities • The upgrade of luminosity of the CERN-LHC • Super-beams and neutrino facilities • Fast cycling synchrotron design • Beta-beams study ESGARD decided to set-up working groups to help developing consistent set of research activities, in line with the priorities stated in the Strategy Document adopted by the CERN Council, and that could be imbedded in an (or several) Integrated Activity (IA) projects • High-intensity, high-energy proton beams (convener: R. Garoby) • Novel accelerating systems (convener: E. Jensen) • Superconducting RF acceleration system (convener: O. Napoly) A first meeting was help on October 30 at CERN

  12. Mandate of the Working Groups • Starting from the LoI received, the working groups are expected to establish • a consistent set of prioritized Joint Research Activities, including a first estimate of the needed resources for each activity, • Identify the infrastructures that will benefit from the proposed R&D, • Identify the infrastructures that could be subject to Transnational Access, • A consistent set of Networking Activities related to the R&D activities • The laboratories/institutes/universities that would participate to the different activities. • A possible coordinator for each NA, TA and JRA • It is expected to get a first report from these working groups during the CARE06 • meeting in Frascati from November 15 to 17, 2006.

  13. Conclusion ESGARD has started the process for coordinating the next round Accelerator R&D project The call for LoI has shown that there is a strong interest from the community to strengthen further the accelerator R&D program in Europe ESGARD has set up working groups to propose a consistent set of Networking, Transnational Access and R&D activities ESGARD will meet on December 5th to review the situation and discuss the next steps
