Dive into the fascinating evolution of humans and hominids, from changes in skull anatomy to behavioral adaptations. Learn the six types of evidence for evolution and engage in interactive learning activities.
E N D
Bell Ringer • Have your homework out and ready to be checked • Write learning targets at the top of your notebook page • Name and define two of the six types of evidence for evolution.
Agenda • Bell Ringer (5 minutes) • Introduction (5 minutes) • Notebook Input (20 minutes) • Notebook Output (10 minutes) • Group Work (30 minutes) • Independent Practice (10 minutes) • Exit Quiz and Grading (10 minutes)
Brain Game • See if you can figure out what the following sentences say: • “It deson’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod aepapr, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer are in the rghit pcale. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit pobelrm.S1M1L4RLY, Y0UR M1ND 15 R34D1NG 7H15 4U70M471C4LLY W17H0U7 3V3N 7H1NK1NG 4B0U7 17.” • What does this tell you about the human brain???
Essential Question • How did brain size, jaw size, language and manufacture of tools change as hominids evolved into modern humans? What are the different parts of the brain?
Questions to Answer Today! • What is a human? • What is a hominid? • What were early humans (hominids) like? • How have we changed? What will we be?
Why are we talking about this??? • We want to know about our ancient hominid ancestors! • Comparing skulls and bone structure of hominid fossils supports COMMON ANCESTRY!
Notebook Input • Write down words in RED
A. Evolution of the Skull • As human skulls evolved, there were: • Smaller jaw sizes • Larger skull size larger brain size
What do you observe changing over time? • Bipedalism: Ability to walk upright
B. Bipedalism • Other primates are quadrapedal=walk on 4 legs • Hominids became bipedal=walk on 2 legs • Bipedalism allows you to use your arms to carry things while you walk
Human Evolution • Do you think our skulls were the only things to evolve over time?
C. The Evolution of Behavior • As time progressed, we also started to see an evolution in behavior. • With evolution came: • Language • Manufacture of tools • Making tools = no longer using teeth as basic tools = smaller jaw size
What is a hominid? • Any human-like species, including us. • Bipedal (walks on two legs). • Intelligent (large brain, uses tools).
There have been at least a dozen different species of hominids over the last five million years or so.
Homo sapiens.Anatomically modern humans. • Oldest fossils found so far are perhaps 195,000 years old. • Found in Africa (also in Ethiopia).
Notebook Output Choose to write one of the following: • In your own words, explain how the hominid behavior of using tools affected skull anatomy OR • In your own words, explain how change in skull/brain size affected hominid behavior
Group Work • Complete the group work packet at the lab tables! • Work with urgency! • Use scholar voices! • Do not walk around the room! 15 minutes 15 minutes End End
Group Work • Spend 15 minutes completing the Skull Analysis Gizmo on the tablets • Use the other 15 minutes to complete the group work packet 15 minutes 15 minutes End End
Independent Practice 10 minutes End
Homework • Complete notebook output assignments for evidence of evolution day 1 and 2
