You will need to know the definitions of the following: • Baroque • Protestant Reformation • Counter Reformation • Fugue
Theme: “THE CLASH” • Dramatic religious split in the Church due to PROTESTANTISM. • The Catholic response = Counter-Reformation = need to attract viewers with religious art which impacts onlookers in a different way. • Protestant areas (Northern Europe) respond through non-religious themes (genre paintings which teach moral lessons)
You need to know the answers to the following: • Who are Caravaggio and Bernini? Be able to recognize their work. • Who was Diego Velazquez, and what is depicted in his piece, The Maids of Honor? • What are the overall characteristics of Baroque art? • Who are the primary composers of Baroque music? • Be able to recognize “Rubens”. • What was Rembrandt interested in depicting in his art? Be able to recognize Rembrandts. • Know background of the four scientists/philosophers we discussed. i.e. Galileo
Overall characteristics of Baroque Art and Architecture: • Open-spaced compositions • Images capture MOTION in order to elicit EMOTION • Scientific advances = giant conceptual leaps in art • Artists’ attention to extreme detail • More attention to light = tenebrism • Psychological exploration • art for the middle class • Rich, ornate, elaborate, fanciful
