Operating system – OS • All computers have it • Computer cant function without it • It’s a program that allows other software's to communicate with hardware • E.g. windows vista, windows 7, etc • Sorts out where to store data • Deals with Security issues e.g. password, username ,ect • It organizing files und folders • Deals with saving, rename, move, copy, deleting, closing and opening file • Input and output control • Manages all data transfer

Error handling: • Sometimes you cant log on • The OS needs resources e.g. printer • CPU ( central processing united) is the brain of the computer, controls all the process • Handle several programs or software at the same time • Provides a user interface • Type in commands, use graphical user interface (GUI) • It handles files • You can organize storing your files in directions and folders • Every files has properties- give you information's about the file • If you format the disk drive you will destroy the drive

5. Utility Programs • Part of the system software • Designed to do 1 or 2 specify tasks • Some tasks are File compression, File sorting, file renaming, file conversion, File repair and Disk Defragmentation • Some come with their operating system • You can buy them

6. Drivers • Is a program that translate the commands from the operating system into command that the hard ware will understand • Each piece of device have his own driver

Application Software • They work through the operating system to gain access to the hardware • Carries out task that the user wants to do e.g. write letters, draw graphs, editing pictures, downloading movies, etc Types of Software's: • General purpose software • Specials software • Bespoke software • Loads of features that you can use • You can download them • Its cheap to buy • They are thoroughly tested, don’t have any problems

8. Specialist software • The packages are generally not found in shops, but you can see them in some shops • They are designed to do a specific task, such as appointment system, stock controls system or company pay role system • Some features that might not be used

Bespoke Software • Is designed for a special company e.g. company logo, company name, the people of the company, information about company, contact details about the computer and people • No one else can use • It will work how they wanted it to work • No features that you don’t use • Everything in the software is used • Takes up a long time to design it • Team of people can only develop it • User support is bad, no one can help you • It costs a lot to fix the software
