English III Journal • Writing completed in the journal is informal, but will likely lead to ideas for future polished pieces. • I am the only one who will read your journal. • Journal will be a major grade every 6-weeks. • At the end of this six-weeks, you will be writing a short, fictional story.
Why is writing a relevant skill? • Your journal is where you will explore techniques and tools writers use as well as record important thoughts, feelings, ideas and dreams. • Being a writer means being able to communicate thinking.
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe’ • Idgie Threadgoode - This character is a blond-haired tomboy who doesn't believe in racism, and is locally famous for starting the Whistle Stop Cafe. • Dot Weems - This character runs the post office and the local newspaper in the town of Whistle Stop.
Fried Green Tomatoes • The Whistle Stop Café opens in Alabama in 1929. Although Idgie Threadgoode runs the place, she has hired two African-American women, Sipsey and Onzell, to do the cooking so her customers don't have to worry about being poisoned. • Dot Weems comes into the café with her husband, Wilbur to write an article for the Weems Weekly, a newspaper. Wilbur thinks the food at the Whistle Stop is so good, he might not ever eat at home again.
