CNRC Presentation – March 2004 • What we have planned for you tonight: • Traci will go over highlights of the objectives next • Forest Licensees will review their implementation process • Small Group discussion • Large Group report and discussion • Summary of Next Steps
Biodiversity Objectives – Background • A Group called the Landscape Objective Working Group was established in the Fall of 2002. • It is made up of representatives from Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management and some locally based Forest Companies. • There has been periodic meetings with MOF and WLAP, a forum with Ecologists and Researchers and a couple of background presentations to the CNRCs. • The objectives will become legal objectives through the Forest and Range Practice Act or the Land Act and forest licensees will have to address them in their Forest Stewardship Plans or Forest Development Plans.
Biodiversity Objectives – Background • The Landscape Objective Working Group has prepared Draft objectives for three elements of biodiversity: • old forest retention; • old interior forest; and, • young forest patch size distribution. (Traci will expand in the next presentation.)
Biodiversity Objectives – Key Points • These objectives: • were developed using current scientific information • are designed to balance the requirements of environmental and economic sustainability • will be periodically updated to incorporate new knowledge and address changing environmental economic and social conditions
Biodiversity Objectives – What Now? • Opportunity for Review and Comment • 60 day review period about March 15 to May 15 • Open Houses – Mid April • Compile comments and responses • Establish Objectives – early Summer
Biodiversity Objectives – Why Comment? • Document of comments and responses will include: • INPUT • LOWG RESPONSE • agree • disagree with rationale, or • outside of mandate • Document will be used by the Regional Director of MSRM when establishing objectives. • Will be a public document.
Biodiversity Objectives – Why Comment? • We need to know: • what you think of these objectives – good and bad • will they achieve what “we, the communities” want • if you think these objectives will affect you and how • if you need more info about these objectives • Your input will be useful.
