Habitat • Fresh water: rivers and streams • Indonesia, Southern China, the Philippines, Southern India, and Southeast Asia • Live in wet and warm climates • Sleep in tight spaces • When it swims it looks like a fish home
Food and Water • Crabs • Mussels • Frogs • small fish • Crustaceans • Snakes • Pounds food with a rock • Drink 20 to 25%of water of their body weight home
Daily Behavior • Sleep during the day • Play fetch by themselves • Can hold their breath up to 4 minutes • Are nocturnal • More then 12 calls • Hunted by humans for fur • Mom cares for them up to a year • Taught how to swim, catch food, groom their fur, dive, and slide down slopes home
Family Structures • 1 born at a time • Within 1 day they are active • No teeth and eyes closed when born • Pups can swim at 2 weeks old • Feed on their mother for a year • Most mothers have 6 pups • Males stay with female for 3 days after mating • Mate at any time of year • Pups cry when mother is gone • Pups can float when they are born • Family groups of 12 home
Interesting Facts • Endangered but growing • Humans hunt them • Pollution kills them • Groom fur every day • Fur on feet and all the way up • Special muscles help close ears and nose • Smallest species of otters • 60 days after mating female has pups home
