Issues arising from the implementation of a comprehensive assessment approach in a large multi-modal unit Mary Rice, Dale Holt and Jan Fermelis Deakin University
Context • MMH299 - core semester B. Com unit at Deakin University, • Multi-campus, multi-modal - off-campus nationally and internationally • About1200 students enrolled in 2002, 600 each semester - increased to 800 in 2003 • Aims: broaden students’ understandings of complexity of communication and develop ability to communicate in many business contexts
Assessment approach • Teacher assessment • Peer and self-assessment • Individual and group work • Oral and written presentations • Portfolios and journals
Issues • Changing students’ perceptions of the nature of assessment • Increasing students’ understandings of meaning and value of assessment tasks • Achieving the intent of assessment tasks • How should undergraduate students be assessed?
Issues • Group assessment work • Plagiarism • Tension between consistency and equity in assessment and catering for diverse student cohorts • Tension between staff workloads and quality assessment practices
Discussion questions • Given the ubiquitous nature of information dissemination, and the fact that the trend towards plagiarism is a cultural phenomenon not confined to academia, are we losing the battle? • How might the use of information and communications technology help to address some of the issues experienced in large classes with diverse cohorts?
