Creating Communities Free of Sexual Violence MACURH 2010 November 6, 2010
Commonalities… • Introductions • Definitions • Sexual Violence • Sexual Assault, Rape, Stalking, Partner Violence • Victim • Perpetrator • Bystander • Community
Important to know… • I do not have all the answers…but know a lot of information • We are not here to blame this issue on men…it is not their fault! • Sexual violence is not just a woman’s issue…it is a societal/cultural/social justice issue • Men and women need to work together as partners to combat this issue
Important to know… • Alcohol (or other drugs) are almost always a factor in assaults that occur on a college campus • In this presentation, we will primarily talk about perpetrators being men, with the caveat in place that we acknowledge men are victims of this crime. • Sexual violence is more often than not perpetrated by someone known to the victim in a location familiar to the perpetrator or victim
Think about this… • Research conducted by Dr. David Lisak(2002) • 1,882 men with average age of 28 • Employed, attending college (part time) • Representative of the diverse American culture • 120 men committed 483 rapes of women • 44 men committed a single act of rape • 76 men committed 439 rapes (average of 6/individual)
Sexual Violence Stats National College Student Stats • 1 out of 6 college women have been raped or have been the victim of an attempted rape during the past year. (Weitzman, E., DeJong, W., and Finn, P. Alcohol and Acquaintance Rape: Strategies to Protect Yourself and Each Other. The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention. U.S. Department of Education, 1999.)
Sexual Violence Stats National College Student Stats • 84% of men whose actions matched the legal definition of rape, said that what they did was definitely not rape. (Koss, M.P. 1998. Hidden Rape: Incident, Prevalence, and Descriptive Characteristics of Sexual Aggression and Victimization in a National Sample of College Students. Rape and Sexual Assault, Vol. II. edited by A.W. Burgess. New York: Garland Publishing Company.)
Sexual Violence Stats National College Student Stats • Only 12% of undergraduate women whose experiences fit the definition of rape, identified themselves as rape victims. (Schwartz, M., Leggett, M. Bad Dates or Emotional Trauma- the Aftermath of Campus Sexual Assault. Violence Against Women, Vol. 5, No. 3, March, 1999.)
Sexual Violence Stats National College Student Stats • 1 out of 15 male students raped or attempted to rape a woman during the past year. (Weitzman, E., DeJong, W., and Finn, P. Alcohol and Acquaintance Rape: Strategies to Protect Yourself and Each Other. The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention. U.S. Department of Education, 1999.)
Sexual Violence Stats National College Student Stats • Only 5% of undergraduate women reported their sexual assault to police. (Schwartz, M., Leggett, M. Bad Dates or Emotional Trauma- the Aftermath of Campus Sexual Assault. Violence Against Women, Vol. 5, No. 3, March, 1999.)
Community Prevention • Sex Offenders • Cannot reach (jail) • Facilitators • Offenders discuss crimes • Laugh at jokes • Don’t stop offenders • Bystanders**** • Know less than facilitators • Have some knowledge • Don’t commit to action
How do youcreate a community that is free of sexual violence? • Educate, Conversations, Confront • What are your thoughts?
Helpful Questions… • Help me understand why you talk about men/women that way? • I noticed you…why? • Relationship conversations… • I don’t appreciate the way you talk to me…please stop. • I don’t appreciate the way you are talking about my friend… • Please reconsider the way you talk about victims…they don’t ask to be victims • Tell me what you don’t find true about this poster…
