Reminder when doing fieldwork in coastal environment • Fieldwork safety • Keep well away from cliff tops, especially in wet and windy conditions • Avoid working near the base of steep cliffs – wear a hard hat if appropriate • If you are going to measure waves, make sure your students do it from a safe and secure position where they are protected from largest waves. • Take special care on wet and slippery rocks on the beach foreshore at low tide. • Be aware of the tides and never wade around a headland unless the tide is going out
Resources: Paper maps are essential • Time: Some coastal studies look at temporal variations in processes along a stretch of coast, as well as the spatial changes in particular features or systems. This means that your students may need to revisit the sites.
Possible Topics in Coastal Environment and Sustainable Coastal Management (Holmes and Warn, 2003) • Cliff profile (crossover with the topic Dynamic Earth of elective part) • Wave surveys (wave frequency, wave height, wavelength, wave energy) • Human Use of Coast • Threat of Coast • Cost and Benefit Analysis of Coastal Endowment
Cheung Chau • Effect of tidal wave under the influence of Typhoon Hagupit – A Case Study • Location of Cheung Chau Wind Surfing Centre • Location Selection of Cheung Chau Pier • Water Quality Studies between East Bay and Cheung Chau Typhoon Shelter • ………
