  3. The Election 1836 • Van Buren won by the popular votes of 765,483 to 739,795. • 170 to 124 votes in the electoral college. • He was the first President born in America • He served for eight years • He was above average in intelligence, education, and training

  4. Martin Van Buren’s Jackson problems • Van Buren inherited Jackson’s numerous and vengeful enemies • He threatened to trigger war with the British

  5. Separation of Government and the Bank • Mobs started forming about three weeks before Van Buren. • He had to take the full force of it. • Van Buren came up with the “Divorce Bill” • His plan was to separate the government from the bank. • His plan was never very popular.
