  1. Police Diversion of young offenders and Indigenous over-representation By Sam Gunning, Philip Chin, Nikita Ash, Emily Fraser and Ican Chandra

  2. The Problem/Issue • High concentration of Indigenous crime amongst youth as compared to the non-Indigenous population • Indigenous youth much more likely to have re-contact with the Australian legal system, with more serious offences • Disparity in the use of warnings and diversionary conferencing to discourage further criminal activity

  3. The Study

  4. The Study • A large proportion of offences re-committed are by the indigenous people • Of this proportion, the majority are male • Of the male proportion of offenders, the majority are youths

  5. Findings

  6. Suggestions/Recommendations • The study indicated that priority should be given to preventative programs before first contact with the justice system • Parental training programs • Community awareness programs • As diversionary conferencing has been proven effective when used within the youth population as a whole, there should be an increase in its use for Indigenous youths • Increase should also occur so as to provide a fair and equitable system free of racial bias
