LHCb(UK) Computing StatusGlenn Patrick 05.07.00 Prototype (Tier 1) UK national computing centre • Bid to Joint Infrastructure Fund (JIF) for £5.9M. • Submitted in Feb 2000, outcome known in ~ Nov. • Sited at RAL. • Shared between ALICE/ATLAS/CMS/LHCb. • All UK LHC institutes signed bid. Integrated Resources2001 2002 2003 Processors (PC99-450MHz) 830 1670 3100 Disk (TB) 25 50 125 Tape (TB) 67 130 330 LHCb Computing Model Meeting (CERN)

UK Tier 2 Centres? • Liverpool MAP/COMPASS (LHCb/ATLAS) • Funded by Joint Research Equipment Initiative (JREI) 1998. • 300 PCs (400MHz,PII) and 3*1TB disk nodes. • Operational since December 1999. • Prototype Scottish Computing Centre (LHCb/ATLAS) • Bid to Joint Research Equipment Initiative (JREI) May 2000. Outcome known in ~ December. • MC prod.facility (128 cpus+1TB RAID) at Glasgow. • 5TB RAID disk array + server at Edinburgh.

  3. Other Initiatives Long Term Science Review (PPARC) • LHC computing/Grid identified as priority. • Government Spending Review - indication in July, details known in October/November? EU Data Grid Proposal • UK (PPARC) is one of the lead partners. • IBM(UK) is industrial partner. • Committees and “teams” evolving. • Preliminary answer in July?

  4. Desktop users Which Grid Topology for LHCb(UK)? Flexibility important. CERN Tier 0 INFN IN2P3 etc…. Tier 1 RAL etc…. etc…. Tier 2 etc…. Liverpool Glasgow Edinburgh    Department
