Disciples with overloaded boats . WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR BOAT? . LUKE 5
E N D
LUKE 5 1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the Word of God, 2 he saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let downthe nets for a catch." 5Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.“
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men."
THE FIRST SEASON IN FISHINGThe Disciples in the Boat alone • Jesus' disciples were in the boat fishing • They had work hard all night but hadn’t caught anything • They were tired, disappointed, distressed, sleepy, about to giving up.
THE SECOND SEASON IN FISHINGJesus is in the Boat with the Disciples • At Jesus' command they threw their nets in deep waters and caught a good catch • They even needed the help of other boats, because their boat was overloaded.
WHAT CAN BE IN A PERSON’S BOAT? WHAT HE/ SHE HAS CAUGHT THROUGH LIFE
SOME FEEL LIKE PETER: have worked hard and haven’t caught anything. • SOME SAY TO THEMSELVES: • What have I done with my life? • What have I built so far? • What are the results of my hard work? • SOME FEEL THEIR BOATS ARE OVERLOADED WITH THINGS THEY DIDN’T WANT.
THE DISCIPLES’ BOAT WAS OVERLOADED • They were found by Jesus at the shore tired and washing their nets. • When Jesus entered in the disciples’ boat, it was overloaded with tiredness, frustation, perhaps anxiety, and fear for the future.
WHAT CAN BE IN A PERSON’S BOAT? • Natural Disasters • Financial problems • Housing Market • Stock Market • Personal business • Disappointment • Anger, Resentment • Distress • Shame • Personal Stress • Marriage Conflicts • Sickness • Aging • Mental & Emotional Illness • Addictions • Sin Addiction • Broken Relationships • Death • Defeat
YOUR FIRST CATCH • Perhaps you feel your first catch was not good • Perhaps you feel tired, disappointed, distressed • Perhaps Jesus was not in the boat with you when you went for that catch • But NO MATTER what has happened to you, no matter how tired you feel, and no matter how empty those waters were…. • GOD HAS A NEW CATCH FOR YOU. • HE GIVES YOU A NEW OPPORTUNITY TO OVERLOAD YOUR BOAT WITH A GOOD CATCH.
LEARN FROM THE DISCIPLES • They received Jesus inside their boat. • The didn’t pay attention to the crave of their bodies for sleeping, or resting, or food. They did not refuse to serve Jesus. They didn’t know Jesus was going to bless them with the right “hint” to the best catch of their lives. • They put the service of the Kingdom first. • They believed in Jesus' words and they followed His instructions. They didn’t question Him. They obeyed.
BELIEVE IN A 2ND OPPORTUNITY • DON’T PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY AND SOUL • LET JESUS COME INTO THE BOAT • DON’T QUESTION HIM • JUST SERVE HIM • PUT THE KINGDOM AS FIRST IN YOUR LIFE AND IN THE USE OF YOUR BOAT • LEAVE THE SHORE AND SAIL YOUR BOAT INTO THE DEEP WATERS • GOD WILL INSTRUCT YOU ABOUT WHAT IS NEXT.
This morning Jesus is calling us to fish in new territory: to fish in deep waters. Deep waters may look like a hard place to fish, or even scary sometimes. But it is there that one can find God’s best catch.
HELPING THE OVERLOADED BOATS • JESUS IS ALSO CALLING US TO HELP THOSE WHOSE BOATS ARE OVERLOADED • OUR TASK IS TO THELP THEM. • HOW DO WE DO THAT? WITH ENCOURAJEMENT, PRAYER, LOVE, SUPPORT, ETC.
2 Timothy 2:2-5 • 2And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. • 3Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. • 4No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs— • he wants to please his commanding officer. • 5Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules.
1 CORINTHIANS 9:24-25 • 24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. • 25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
