SailboatTerms • Halyard - the line used to raise the sail • Jib - a triangular sail at the bow of the boat • Down haul - line attached to the bottom of the boom to pull it down to tighten the sail • Mast - vertical pole that supports the sails& boom • Boom - pole attached to the mast to which the foot of the sail is attached
Sailboat Terms • Jib sheet - a line from the jib to the cockpit to control the jib • Telltale - a string or ribbon attached to the side stay to show the direction of the wind • Gunwale - the upper edge of the boats side • Boomvang - a rope connected to the bottom of the mast which holds the boom down
Sailboat Terms • Hiking strap - straps to hook your toes under so you can lean out over the side of the boat • Centerboard - a thin blade extending form the bottom of the hull to prevent the oat from sliding sideways while sailing • Sheet - a line that controls the angle of the sail to the wind • Mainsail - the larger sail connected between the top of the mast and the boom
Sailboat Terms • Batten - long thin narrow strips of wood placed in pickets on the trailing edge of the sail to hold the sail out • Traveler - a line that runs across the transom that the main sheet travels on • Transom - the stern where the rudder is attached • Rudder - a moveable flat blade hinged vertically on the transom and is used to steer the boat
Sailboat Terms • Gudgeon - hardware attached to the rudder that slides onto the pintle to connect the rudder to the transom • Tiller extension - a handle that extends the length of the tiller • Shroud - wire cables that run from the top of the mast to both slides of the boat used to hold the mast in place • Centerboard trunk - opening that the centerboard slides through
Sailboat Terms • Forestay - a wire cable running from the top of the mast to the bow of the boat • Thwart - the seat that reaches across the boat • Outhaul - a rope used for hauling a sail out to a spar • Pintle - hardware attached to the transom that the rudder gudgeon slides onto allowing the rudder to pivot
Sailboat terms • Gooseneck - hinged fitting on the mast which connects the boom to the mast • Tiller - a bar used to turn the rudder • Drain plug - a hole at the bottom of the transom that drain plug seals. When removed any water in the boat flows out • Fail-lead - a guide for running ear to keep a rope from chafing
