Disaster Distress Helpline: Overview • Goal: To assist individuals and families experiencing emotional distress related to disaster, in order to help them move forward on the path to recovery • Toll-free, 24/7 crisis hotline 1-800-985-5990 • 24/7 crisis SMS texting service (text “TalkWithUs” to 66746) • Multi-lingual interpretation services for hotline in 100+ languages • Crisis counseling available 24/7 in Spanish via hotline & SMS (text ‘Hablanos’ to 66746) • Hotline and SMS available to all U.S. territories: Pacific Islands can text “TalkWithUs” or “Hablanos” to 1-206-430-1097 & Caribbean Islands to 1-212-461-4635 • TTY (1-800-846-8517)
Disaster Distress Helpline: Key Players State Disaster Mental Health Coordinators are key stakeholders for ensuring the success of the Disaster Distress Helpline (DDH), and in turn the DDH is a key resource for all states and U.S. territories throughout all phases of major natural and human-caused disasters (preparedness, response and short- and long-term recovery)
Disaster Distress Helpline and State Disaster Mental Health Coordinators (SDMHCs): Examples of Collaborations • Hurricane Sandy (10/29/2012) • Pre-impact: Initial Contact & Coordination of Resources (PA, DE, WV, D.C., etc.) • Long Term Recovery: Promotion of DDH Hurricane Sandy Services & Assistance with Maintaining Contacts • Boston Marathon Bombing (4/15/2013) • Impact: Immediate contact with MA upon news of bombing; participation in statewide behavioral health response coordination calls; connections made for L2HS with key local/state resources • Rhode Island Station Club Fire 10-year Anniversary (2/2013) & Circus Accident (5/2014) • DDH included as 24/7 resources on statewide hotline set up for 10-year Station Club Fire • Immediately after circus incident, contact with L2HS DDH staff initiated & inclusion of DDH in press release
