From Ohio Attended the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York Republican Most important battles were Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg Captured Fort Henry and Fort Donelson(First Union victory) and Vicksburg Was taught a lesson through his loss at Shiloh and was never surprised by another attack Ended the siege at Chattanooga Suffered a massive loss at Cold Harbor Fought aggressively, made quick decisions, and led his troops with energy and determination He was very confident in his own decision Fun Fact: His real initials spell out H.U.G. Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant
Major General Irvin McDowell(Union’s First Commander) • Born in Columbus, Ohio • Most important battles were the First Battle of Bull Run, Cedar Mountain, and the Second Battle of Bull Run • Taught at West Point Military Academy • He followed an imaginative but ambitiously complex strategy during the First Battle of Bull Run that his troops could not follow, which resulted in failure • Started off winning, but then Stonewall Jackson showed up with reinforcements • Replaced by McClellan after the defeat • Also blamed for the failure of the Second Battle of Bull Run
Major General George McClellan • From Pennsylvania • Graduated from West Point • Democrat • Most important battles: Peninsula Campaign, Antietam • In May 1861, he was made commander of the Department of Ohio • Ran the confederates out of Western Virginia • Initiated the Peninsular campaign and was blamed for its collapse • Defeated the Confederates at the battle of Antietam • His meticulousness actually led to his defeat • Replaced by Burnside after the Peninsula Campaign
Major General John Pope • From Illinois • Important battle: New Madrid, Second Battle of Bull Run • Captured New Madrid on March 14, 1862 • Captured Island No. 10 through a sneak attack • Suffered a loss at the Second Battle of Bull Run because he was indecisive • He was very confident, almost to the point of arrogance • Historians believe Pope was incompetent and timid
Major General Ambrose Burnside • From Rhode Island • Most important battles: First Battle of Bull Run ,New Bern & North Carolina coast, Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Knoxville Campaign, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Petersburg • captured Roanoke Island, New Bern, Beaufort, and Fort Macon • Commanded under George McClellan in Antietam and cost the Union the battle because of his stubbornness • Defeated terribly at Fredericksburg • Removed by Lincoln in order to keep Joseph Hooker • Commanded under Grant and Meade
Major General Joseph Hooker • From Massachusetts • Most important battles: Peninsula Campaign, Second Battle of Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Battle of Lookout Mountain, Battle of Missionary Ridge, Atlanta Campaign • Replaced Burnside after the battle of Fredericksburg • At Chancellorsville, he led the largest Union army ever into a loss to the Confederacy • Replaced by George Meade • Criticized McClellan for his failure to capture Richmond • Overall he was an outstanding administrator • Did many things to help the lives of the troops like fixing the daily diet and camp sanitary changes
Major General George Meade • From Pennsylvania • Most important battle: Chancellorsville, Gettysburg • Replaced Joseph Hooker after the battle of Chancellorsville • Won the battle of Gettysburg with the Army of the Potomac, which was the turning point of the war • Radical Republicans thought that he was a copperhead and tried to relieve him from command. However, they failed. • Criticized by Lincoln for not aggressively pursing the Confederates • He was known to be a modest man
