Rampage Higgins O’Brien Spring 2012
Methodical and Selective • Mass murderers were traditionally seen as “going berserk”, “going ballistic”, or “going postal” • However recent data suggests that these killers are in touch with reality, planning their attacks weeks or months in advance • They assemble an arsenal of weaponry, and select specific targets - This can be certain individuals, a location, or an entire category of people - Those not “responsible” for the offenders' misery are often ignored
Methodical and Selective continued • Many rampages take place at the killers workplace or residence • Relationship problems or personal failure are frequently cited as motivation • Many killers attempt suicide after the attacks
Losses and Frustrations • Random attacks do occur from offenders with paranoid and psychotic views of the world • But the majority of these attacks stem from real and unfortunate losses • Loss of a relationship • Loss of a job • Dishonor • 60% of offenders white, 93% males
Profile of the Workplace Avenger • 45% of workplace killers are at least 35 years old • Typical offender is a white middle aged male, who feels employment problems are the end of the world • Judge self-worth by what they do • Little data regarding women killers, but as more enter job roles traditionally reserved for men these numbers may increase
Profile of the Workplace Avenger continued • Not all disgruntled employees take out their anger on the company • Some may blame themselves and become depressed • Suicide • Take frustration out on family • Workplace murderers frequently believe they are the victim, and that they are being treated unfairly • Some believe guns play a key role • It corrects the perceived power imbalance an offender may feel • Psychologically distances themselves from victims • Lethal, easy, and concealable
Murderous Customers and Clients • Individuals sometimes blame “the system” for their problems • Mental health and medical workers are at particular risk for being attacked by clients • Offender is typically an isolated middle aged male who externalizes his frustration on a specific institution • Automated customer services have made life more convenient for some, but can aggravate others
