  1. Scheme of Redemption

  2. Goals of Our Study • To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross • To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross • To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind - who He is and what He is like • Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet

  3. Recap • "Scheme of Redemption" - The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin • God was not in a dilemma when sin entered the lives of man • View the Bible as one book, with 66 chapters, and the real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew • This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin • Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence

  4. Background of Redemption • Genesis 3 - 12 can be defined as "The Background of Redemption" • It is in the chapters that we learn about the destructive nature of sin • It begins God's explanation to us of why He must get to the cross

  5. Genesis 3:6 • Real division of the Bible takes place here • Prior to Genesis 3:6, the earth was essentially Heaven materialized • Perfect and free from sin • This all changed at Genesis 3:6

  6. Satan's Deceptions • Genesis 3:1-3 - Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, "You shall not eat from any tree of the garden"? The woman said to the serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, "You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die."

  7. Satan's Deceptions • Genesis 3:4-6 - The serpent said to the woman, "You surely will not die! 5 For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate

  8. Satan's Deceptions • 1 John 2:15-16 - Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world • Eve saw the tree was good for food, a delight to the eyes, and could make her wise

  9. Satan's Deceptions • What was Satan's accusation of God? • He is a liar • He cannot be trusted • He is denying you of what is rightfully yours to have • He is not worthy of being loved solely because of who He is (same accusation he made in Job)

  10. Sin - The Source of All Suffering • No one is immune from the suffering caused by sin. Sin’s effect on the world is manifested in 3 primary ways • Its naturally destructive influence on the world • Sinful behavior of others • Consequences of one's own sin • Every tear, every drop of blood, every groan of pain that has been shed is all a result of sin

  11. God Is Not To Blame • God is not to blame for the ills and sufferings of this world. It is a life each of us chose. How do we know this? • Because each of us has seen the fruit of that tree, have taken from it, and have consumed every bit of it • Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

  12. God Is Not To Blame • Job accused God for his suffering, but God corrected Job with Heavenly discipline and left Job standing corrected and speechless • When natural disasters occur, the world calls them "acts of God" • Many a father and mother have shaken their fists at God, and screamed out "why did you take my child!?" • At the foundation of each of these is sin. Suffering from sin was not God's desire for mankind

  13. How does knowing this help us? • How can it help us to understand that sin, and not God, is the source of sufferings? • It has the ability to draw us closer to God • Helps us realize even more the need to be as close to God as we can

  14. Sin Changed Everything for Mankind • The ground became cursed • Genesis 3:17-18 - Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18 Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field • You ever get annoyed with briars? They're a result of the curse of sin!

  15. Sin Changed Everything for Mankind • Manual labor became the means to sustain life • Genesis 3:19 - By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return

  16. Sin Changed Everything for Mankind • Women suffer much more in child birth • Genesis 3:16a - I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; • Marital strife also a result of sin • Genesis 3:16b - Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.

  17. The First Gospel Sermon? • When was the first gospel sermon preached? • Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel

  18. First Gospel Sermon Is Preached • "I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed" • What is being spoken of here? • A metaphorical prophecy of Christ

  19. First Gospel Sermon Is Preached • "He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel" • What is this a metaphor of? • Redemption • While Satan may deal a injuring blow to Christ, Satan will be dealt a deathly blow • Satan may have won a battle, but he would lose the war • From here, God will begin the journey to the cross to redeem mankind from sin

  20. Summary • Background of redemption • Where it all began • How we messed it up • God begins His plan to remedy our sin problem • First revelation of that plan is made

  21. Next week • Genesis 3-12 – Continue on with studying the background of redemption • Adam’s descendants • The flood • Intro to Abraham
