The Changing Remedial Landscape & PA 12-40 Past Future Present
Present • Regional Remediation work groups working on the best practices for the lowest level of remediation. • Advisory Group working on the policy statements and logistics. • Pilots started Spring ‘13 and Fall ‘13. • Data collection during AY ’13-’14. • Full implementation by Fall ‘14.
Present – Summer Pilots • Two non-credit courses, a Math and an English course. • Web-based program is free for students. • Enrollment = 20 students in each course. • Upon completion of the Math course, students take a Final Exam. Upon passing, students register for Math 095. If not, students retake the Accuplacerto place into Math 095 or higher. • Students enrolled in English will write a 5-8 page paper. Upon passing, they will register for English 063. Otherwise, students may retake the Accuplacer and hopefully placing higher.
Present – Fall ‘13 • Students placing into Math 095 Students Placing in Mat 095 Option 1: Take the 3 credit Math 095 course either traditionally or Computer-Based.. A VERY LATE start Math 095 course (starting at midterm) will also be offered. The cost to the student is 3 credits (approximately $492) Option 2: Sign up and take Math 136 & Math 091. Math 136 is a 4 credit combination Math 095/137 course. Math 091 is a 1 credit “Math Recitation” course that MUST be taken with Math 136. It is not only supplemental instruction, but also a time for group work, enrichment exercises, quiz taking, etc. COST: 5 credits (approximately $776). Option 3: Sign up and take Math 095/137 AMP. AMP = Accelerated Math Program. This is a 6 credit course that is taught traditionally. The advantage of this course is that students who do not pass the Math 095 portion of the course, can choose to enroll in the VERY LATE start Math 095 course for “free”. The cost to the student is 6 credits (approximately $924).
Present – Fall ‘13 Students Placing in Mat 075 Option 1 - Cost of $40; Work at your own pace with help buttons and videos; Accuplacer Diagnostic will provide individualized prescription for students; Students retake the Accuplacer and place out of Math 075 or even Math 095. Option 2: Cost of $776; Students take Math 094 & Math 081. Math 094 is a 4 credit combination Math 075/095 course. Math 081 is a 1 credit “Math Recitation” course. 5 credits.
Present – Fall ‘13 • Accelerated Learning Program- Combo of ENG* H063 and ENG* H101; • Placement determined by high end 063 Accuplacer scores combined with student interest in completing developmental ENG AND ENG 101 in one semester: • Students registered for both (ENG* H101) and (ENG* H063) will have the opportunity to receive 3 developmental credits and 3 for ENG 101.
Present – Fall ‘13 Intensive ENG 063/ENG 101—one pilot of each offered in spring 2013 semester with two of each for fall 2013. Each ENG 063 begins the first 7.5 weeks of the semester, followed by second 7.5 weeks in ENG 101. Students must sign up for both at the beginning of the semester for financial aid. Classes run at same time and on same day and location for entire 16 weeks. Students self-select or recommended into condensed courses.
Future Ensures that students are spending their time and money earning college credits INSTEAD of taking remedial courses that don’t count towards graduation requirements.
Imagine 2014 Future • Multiple Assessments i.e. Accuplacer, High School grades, SATs, Smarter Balance, Writing Sample, etc. • Regional Strategies • Embedded Academic Supports • Customized Modularization
