INBOUND TOURISM IN ESTONIA IN 2011 (January-August) • During the first eight months of 2011, 1.27 million foreign tourists stayed overnight in the accommodation establishments of Estonia. Their number increased by 15% (168,323) compared with the same period last year. • The number of nights spent was 2.65 million (+17% ). Already in 2010 foreign overnights increased by 16% compared with the same period of 2009. • The rapid increase in inbound tourism can be attributed to the substantial increase in the number of direct flights to Tallinn (mostly by Ryanair), the status of Tallinn as one of two European Capitals of Culture and the extensive media coverage of this across Europe. • The number of tourists from the largest source market Finland, amounted to 585,040(+/-0%) and their overnights to 1.18 million (+0.3% ). This can be considered a rather good result, given the strong base figures in the first eight months of 2010 (+18%). • In Tallinn Finns overnights increased by 0.5%, following the substantial (25%) increase in 2010.
TOURISM RECEIPTS 2011 • According to the Bank of Estonia, Estonia’s tourism receipts amounted to EUR 546 mil. in the first half of 2011. This was 15% more than a year ago and exceeded slightly also the previous record level (dating from2008). • Travel receipts (foreign visitors’ expenditures in Estonia) amounted to EUR 408 mil. This was 13% more than a year ago. • Fare receipts (foreign visitors’ payments to Estonian transport companies) amounted to EUR 138 mil. or 24% more than a year ago. • The sea transport receipts increased by 21% and the air transport receipts by 37%. • The sales of accommodation services by all accommodation establishments amounted to 108 million Euros (up 22%). • The sales of accommodation services increased somewhat more than the number of overnights (domestic and foreign overnights together increased by 15%).
