Transition Mathematics Project The Shoreline Connection
Partnership • Shoreline Community College math faculty • Shoreline School District • Shorecrest High School • Shorewood High School • Kellogg Middle School
Initial Goals • Predictive value of High School math attainment • CRS alignment • Preparation for college math • Enhanced communication
Goal 1 • High School Math achievement vs. placement testing, placement, progress
Compass Research • Research description • Results • Math 080 Elementary Algebra • Math 098 Intermediate Algebra Part 2 • Math 099 Intensive Intermediate Algebra
SESRC research • 3 years of Shoreline SD graduates • During the time when the high schools used the McDougall Littell Integrated math curriculum • Follow-up at SCC for average of 3 years after graduation
Some results • The highest level of math taken in HS appears to be the best predictor of college level math placement (fig. 8 & 9) • Students who went directly from high school to a 4-year college were much more likely to have taken math their senior year. (fig. 34)
H.S. Demographic data available (chp. 1 & 2) • Type of college attended • Sex • Ethnicity • G.P.A. • Highest math course passed • Math taken in senior year
SCC Demographic Data available • Math taken 1st year • Level of math taken • College level math course grades • Remedial math course grades
Goal 2CRS Alignment • Shorecrest High School • Shoreline CC
Goal 3 • Help students understand and prepare for college level math courses including improving study skills.
CRS Student AttributesShoreline CC • Math 081 (Math Success Strategies) • Course Development • The Basics • Course Syllabus • Schedule of Topics • Sample lessons/assignments • Pre- and Post- survey questions • Future Plans
CRS Student Attributes & HS Math Study Skills • Posters from TMP project (SC and KMS) • Shorecrest past curriculum coverage • Student self-assessment pre/post • Study Skills plan for high school classes • Vertical alignment CRS student attributes • Teacher website refers parents to Carol Dweck’s “Mindset” • Parent workshops
Goal 4: Enhance Communication • Observations
Impacts of TMP funding • MSS course • Teachers, students, families more knowledgeable about the CRS especially the student attributes section • SC and SCC teachers and students more knowledgeable about Carol Dweck’s work on mindset • Concerted effort to help students develop math study skills at Shorecrest/Kellogg • Better understanding about where students are going to/ coming from
Further Funding linked to TMP • Student Achievement Initiative Grant to revisit COMPASS • AYD
The future • Agile Mind AYD (Academic Youth Development) • CRS alignment with new high school curriculum • SC and Kellogg will revisit vertical alignment of CRS student attributes • Math 081 will continue to be offered at SCC • Future research at SCC-Student Initiative Grant
