  1. Bell Ringer Place on Page 10 in ISN Write in complete sentences  What are at least 3 steps included in the scientific method What are 3 lab safety rules that you learned from yesterday?

  2. Microscopes

  3. Microscope • A tool used to magnify the features of an object.

  4. Compound Microscope • Has two or more lenses • Other parts are: • Eyepiece • Coarse adjustment knob/focus • Fine adjustment knob/focus • Objective Lense • Stage & Stage Clips • Diaphragm • Light Source • Arm • Base

  5. Definitions of Parts • Eyepiece • Contains the 10X magnifying lens • Coarse adjustment knob/focus • Focuses the image under low power • Fine adjustment knob/focus • Focuses the image under high power • Sharpens the image

  6. Definitions (cont.) • Objective lenses • Two or three separate lenses that contain varying powers of magnifying lenses • Stage & Stage Clips • Supports & holds the microscope slide in place while viewing • Diaphragm • Controls amount of light available

  7. More Definitions • Light Source • Mirror, external, or internal light source that shines light through the object being viewed • Arm • Supports the body tube • Base • Supports the microscope

  8. Looking through a Microscope • Lighted area = Field of View • To make brighter, open the diaphragm • To make darker, close the diaphragm

  9. Focus! • Lowest power objective FIRST. • Use coarse adjustment knob • THEN change to highest power objective lense if necessary • Use fine adjustment knob

  10. Calculating Magnification • Want to know how much the object is magnified? • (Magnification of eyepiece) X (magnification of objective lens)

  11. Which way does it go? • Objects on the slide move in the OPPOSITE direction when looking through the eyepiece

  12. Handling the Microscope • One hand under the base & one hand on the arm! • If it has a mirror, DO NOT aim the mirror directly at the Sun.

  13. Let’s Take A LOOK.
