Akansksha (History) Akanksha was established in the year 1994. It is a community based outreach project with focus on girl children of railway community near State Entry Road.
Objectives • To bring awareness on importance of education for girls • To encourage and sensitize community to educate girl child • To empower girls through education and vocational training • To reach-out to children and help their education to prevent drop-out • To improve community health programme by creating health awareness and referring for services

EDUCATION • Formal education (school) • NIOS –(Open Basic Education Secondary & Higher Secondary) • Non Formal Education • Balwadi (preparatory)
HIV/Health Awareness Programme • Conducted 13 meetings with community women on HIV/STD and family planning. And also sensitize the health & education of their children- once in a month • Two street plays on HIV by Ishara on stigma and drugs Mental Health Programme • Life skills sessions once in a week with boys and girls group on different topics conducted for 6 months. (24 Sessions) • 10- 12 – Boy 10 -12 - Girls • Individual counseling by Counselors - 18 sessions -5 children • Group counseling on general topics including HIV/ AIDS- 15 sessions (40-45 children)
Community Foundation for Children and Aging (CFCA) • No. of children in Sponsorship Programme - 19 • Birthday celebration organized 06 times in the year for children • Letter writing:-letters in the month of December with Christmas greetings • 38 Regular letters were written in March • 3- children received letters from their sponsors and they wrote the reply
Salaam Award • Total No. of children : 27 children • Gold : 06 • Silver : 01 • Bronze : 19 • Residential : 01 • 12 girls had gone to Ooty with Aarushi group for Bronze trekking. • 13 boys participated in trekking for bronze, silver and gold awards. • One awardee participated in Gold award trekking to Balasore (Orissa)
Celebrations The centre celebrated all the major festivals with the children and community • 15th August independence day • Raksha Bandhan • Janmastami • Dussehra • Diwali • Guru Nanak Jayanti • Christmas • Eid • 26th January – Republic day • Holi
Community mobilization Community members are sensitized on various issues of children. Now they have better understanding and sensitive to address the issues of children. Stakeholders like; Railway authorities, RPF and GRP are also sensitized on the issues of children and the work of Akanksha/SBT • Have helped three girls and four boys in seeking jobs. All the three girls are doing survey for a company and boys are placed in different office jobs like; attendance and helpers. • Have established good reputation with school authorities in six schools where our children are studying. Also, we help in short-out the problems between parents and schools. • Have established an effective networking with hospitals like; Kalawati, Girdhari Lal, Lady Harding and Railway Hospital to seek health service • Organized a health camp for the community to create awareness and sensitization. The doctors administered tetanus vaccine to 117 people including 100 children.
Achievements New Initiatives • For the first time 12 children participated and completed the Tehelka Summer Workshop that has unleashed a tremendous impact in confidence building among the children. • 16 children participated in annual play, songs and dance organized for 20th year celebrations. It helped not only enhancing skills and confidence but also achieving trust and confidence of their parents. • Children participated in workshops and performances organized by Rene Singh four times in the year. …2..
Six girls given vocational training. Five in beauty culture and one in cutting and tailoring. They did their course at Bal Sahyog under NIOS scheme. • 12 girls have been enrolled in award programme • Children participated in a documentary shot by Lani on empowerment of girls. • Out of 80 children who appeared in the formal school exams; 79 have passed in their classes • 12 children secured position in their respective classes. • The average percentage of marks is 65% • Anil has started working as tour guide in city walk • 3 girls and 1 boy are enrolled in basic retail under NIIT /Apnaghar *
Challenges • Space constraint and the threatening of demolition keep lurking on us. • Environmental problem due to railway station and un-social activities. Future plan • Strengthen education and Vocational Training Programme. • Strengthen new center at State Entry Road (3)
Prerna Centre Prerna centre was established in the year 2003 to help a bunch of children living at platform, railway station & streets. These children don’t have functional family and sell balloons, flowers and beg on the streets. Their parents depend on the earnings of these children and mostly take drugs.
Objectives • To help in maintaining their health & hygiene • Provide safe space to children by sending them to shelter homes for their over all development • To help children to cope with their vulnerable situation through social and life skills • To educate these children through providing NFE • Encourage children to over come the drug dependency and refer for de-addiction
Activities • Outreach to bring these children to platform • Help the children to clean themselves and take bath. We provide soap, oil, tooth brush & paste and clothes. • Morning breakfast, lunch and nutrition at afternoon • Provide non-formal education and connect with NIOS if possible • Motivation and counselling to difficult parents • Group sessions and individual sessions • Organize games with the children
Mental Health • Group Session by Counselor : 28 • Individual Counseling : 20 (drugs, behavior, personal motivation) • Referral for special cases : 10
Highlights • 4 boys referred to Armaan for their better development • 2 girls have been referred to Arushi shelter to provide safe space and better environment • 4 children referred to Muskan for detoxification • 2 children participating in Award programme • 3 girls had been referred for detox in Ghaziabad. But, due to being unable to provide shelter it was lapsed. • Three boys have been enrolled in NIOS • Two boys (above 18 yr.) have been placed in work. They are making packets and boxes.
Challenges • Children are very mobile and once they go to their home state Maharastra they don’t come back on time. As a result programme gets held up • Problem of space and environment • No vocational training due to lack of education. Whatever we try to do become ineffective due to mobility
Future plan • We look for a better space for Prerna children • Will focus on motivation and sensitization for better living • Will try to refer more children to shelter homes • Refer more children for drug de-addiction
