  4. HLS Classroom-to-Workplace Program • Provided practical HLS experience for our students • Help local, state and federal agencies meet ad hoc staff needs • Exercises • Planning • Grant administration • GIS • General HLS Program Support • Looking at expansion to the private sector

  5. Summary of Projects • Seven HLS exercises • CDEM Grant admin internship • 3 internships with CDE • Several internships with NORTHCOM • GIS Internship • Six state and local internships this summer • Upcoming exercises

  7. l Process Summary • Network & build relationships with local, state, federal and private sector HLS stakeholders • Assess needs/interest in HLS interns and temp staff for HLS related projects • Provide practical focused HLS education and training to prepare students • Determine funding options • Recruit, screen and place students • Internship? • Temporary hire? • Tailor supervision and reporting

L Funding and Admin Issues/Options • Grant application to the State • No indirect costs allowed • Fund an intern as HLS intern coordinator • Direct contract with host agency • Hourly rate • Project deliverables and administrative costs • Unfunded • Integrated into curriculum • Experience, networking • Results since April 2004 • @$140,000 in intern funding • @11,500 intern/temp hours • Highly competitive graduates with practical experience

L Summary • HLS tasking has created a significant increase in staffing needs at state, local and federal levels • HLS students need the experience and networking • Funding and administration need to be streamlined • Highly cost effective win-win staffing option • Helps build the partnership between your program and your HLS community • Opportunities • Partners and networks • Link between theoretical and applied HLS • Field research and Best Practices
